Door lock barrels.

Featured Replies

Would it be okay to swop my drivers and passenger side lock barrels over drivers feels a bit dloppy 21 years of use and passengers of course basically never used.

I don't think so. According to the parts catalogue they are left & right handed.

OK cheers mate I just did not want to end up with another key it's not playing up as of yet but will monitor it for now thanks bud.

They may be interchangeable given that when you insert a key into the lock, you turn it clockwise or anti-clockwise dependant on function - lock or unlock - no matter which door you use. Am I over simplifying this. There was a post in the Mk2 section where someone swapped the barrels.

No mention of handing:-

Repair kits are available cheaply, never tried one though.

For the next 21 years get in and out of the car using the passenger door then the wear on all the components, lock mechanism, hinges etc will be evened out.

They are listed as left & right. I don't know what makes them different and perhaps they will swap over but I'm just saying what it says.

Item 26....

ok so tried to swap these over today. I took the barrels out offered them up looked exactly the same so tried them in and they went in and locks and central locking all works as should be but now the issue. So thought right take the barrels back out and put some silicone grease in i have and theres the issue the barrels do not come back out so somehow they are handed and now stuck in so im right up **** creak if I cant get these back out ???

so what im basically asking is is it possible for me to strip from the inside to get the locks out ???

Harvey has done a few in-depth videos of various aspects of the door locks, but if both are currently in and working, why do you need to remove them?

because I dont like the idea that they now cannot be removed if a door handle breaks or a window regulator goes or the door lock packs up i cant fix them as you need to remove the barrel first the normal way od removing the barrels will now not work thats the issue.

And also I wanted to redo the door handles as they are really faded but now cant get them out lol.

You'll be able to wrestle them out from inside, I expect, but it'll likely bust bits of the inner handle/lock support framework so be prepared with known good spares I suggest.  Big job, luckily not too hampered by rivetted on carriers.

I'd cross the bridge if you ever come to it; it would be much easier to open the one locked door from inside with a cunning trick like the one described here: https://www.volkswagenforum.co.uk/threads/9n3-doorlocks.40502/

How did you remove the barrels initially, using the key?

yes the normal way but since i crossed them over they now wont come out so something is not the same is you swap them over.

It wasn't broken but you fixed it anyway...

I explained my reasons why as I have before I'm not one for wait till it breaks its called preventative maintenance but as we've all found out in the past sometimes things go sideways it's how we learn and now people in the future will know not to try what I did. This site is a share and learn site not a berate someone with stupid childish comments site that's over on cbbc maybe hang out there a while 🙂

Because yours is already the second pointless and childish reply to this post, having a laugh is one thing but I constantly see the same thing on posts on this site people feeling the need to belittle others and its always the same people doing it there is no need for it.

I think it's fair and reasonable to have a little laugh, you were warned they were different part numbers because they had opposite chirality, you ignored the good advice and did the stupid thing anyway.

Stop complaining and don't be priggish, I've helped you dozens of times in the past.

Actually it was neither confirmed or not as to if the barrels could be swapped over or not no one actually knew but now they do so no need to thank me for this invaluable info I've obtained through testing lol 😁

My first reply may have been pointless and childish but it was a joke and definitely not an attempt to belittle you, I am really surprised that you would consider it to be so.

I disagree that there is no need for humour, when I have done something stupid and am beating myself up about it I really appreciate being shown the funny side of the situation.

You have acheived what you set out to do and will be able to lubricate the locks in another way if they ever need it, rather than saying that others should learn not do what you did on the contrary, they should take confidence from your example of a cheap and easy no cost repair and knowing the implications for future disassembly.

Just to point out that you don't need to touch the locks to do a window regulator.

Fair point J.R. maybe I took it bad probs as I feel a bit of a plonker atm having caused this issue. Anyway I will be taking trim and panel off today to see if its possible to remove the barrels. When I tried to remove yesterday they will move forward to a degree so they are not stuck must basically be a section of the barrel now swapped is just holding onto them.
