Skoda 1.6 TDI rims and tyres

Featured Replies

Čaute, mám takú dilemu idem si kúpiť nové plášte a rozmýšľam nad ráfikmi.

Hey, I have such a dilemma I'm going to buy new tires and I'm thinking about rims. I have a 1.6 tdi station wagon (90ps) and now I have 16 comets from Romster with 205/45/16. I've been thinking over 17 but I don't know or I'll lose a lot of comfort and performance. I even had the idea that I would put 15 there but it would give me small rims but again probably quite comfortable. It is possible to have 17 on the car when I go to the MOT. Because what I looked at my car is a maximum of 16 rims, but I know that some of them also have 18 rims, but these are probably VR. Does anyone have experience with 205 55 R16 tires? Because I read that my Skoda is on 205 45 R16. I think size 55 is better for disk protection and better comfort. It may sound a little confusing, but thank you for any advice and feedback.

I have a mk3 Fabia with 17 inch rims and 215/45/17 tyres as standard, ride is ok on smooth and motorway but bumppy on b roads  the car has a 6 speed box so gearing is not a issue, the spare wheel is a steel rim 195/65/15, last year the dealership who serviced the car wrecked 2 rims on thier ramp, they thought I would not notice and tried to blame it on me but to thier dismay I'm a old hat at this game and had taken photos before car went into the garage on thier forcourt so no problems there, They coiuld not supply a replacement car so I gave them an option of new alloy rims with my tyres refitted or a lend of 3 steel wheels for a few days to get rims repaired, running the car on 4 195/65/15's was strange handeling suffered and gearing odd seemed to pull better but a lot more revs at higher speeds but ride comfort was great, so  I don't think going to 17 inch would be the best idea but I think the 16 inch with low profile would be better for handeling but compfort might suffer and perhaps you might have to use a lower gear to get up hills but would benifit on motorway runs

One thing to note is that the handling, ride, comfort and noise of a tyre has a lot to do with its design and manufacturer rather than just the size.

A cheap make and/or model of tyre will possibly be hard wearing on the tread (but might develop cracks inside the tread and/or sidewalls sooner) but may well give less grip, handling, comfort and more noise.

A better quality designed and made make and/or model of tyre with help with braking, steering, suspension, handling and ride quality and noise.

As with a lot of things in life don't just go on size only.
