Octy 2 noise pulling away

Hi all, I've recently purchased a 1 owner, 55k octy 2. It's a 2.0 bkd 140, 6 speed manual. It's got a really annoying dry bearing kind of noise when you pull away with a bit of lock on. I am a mechanic and it's doing my head in. My initial thoughts are It's diff related as I only hear it when the front wheels are turning at different speeds?

My money's on a cv joint ...

Mine too. check that first. Otherwise could be a noisey diff, check levels in that too. Obviously when you turn lock you create different rotational speeds for the wheels on each side in the diff. You also flex the universal joints inside the cv joint. But you would already know all that.

Thanks, it's 55k. Dealer history to 46k and then independent after that. I checked gearbox level last week and it's flowing out and clean. Doesn't really sound like a cv joint and I think I can feel it through the pedals

What about the brass washers on the output shaft things?

There are no universal joints within a CV, if there were then it could not be called a constant velocity joint.

 

To the OP, are you pulling away on partial lock with a bit of enthusiasm? At a T junction perhaps?

 

One of the characteristics of the traction control system on my MK1 Octavia that always used to grate with me (pun intended) was that when it applied the brakes to the wheel losing traction it gave a horrible graunching transmission noise, appalling to the ears of anyone with mechanical sympathy and knowledge like yourself and I could indeed feel it through the pedal box but also through everyone of my nerve endings.

 

By comparison the MK2 just cut the throttle and would leave me exposed when pulling across a regular junction in the wet where the MK1 would have got across quickly but put my teeth on edge.

@J.R.your such a pedantic thing 99% of the time and respond with something which I agree is more correct engineering vocabulary wise, but in context doesn’t change the suggestions. Turning puts the cv components under stress. 

 

on the subject of being pedantic you offer suggestions for both the mk1 and mk2 but this thread is in mk2. Although, I can see the OPs profile it suggests mk1. The description at beginning specifically identifies mk2.

 

maybe some clarity would help you or others target answers better. For the benefit of others here is an image of a cv joint. A mk1 explanation of traction control is probably not that relevant in a mk2 bkd.

Sorry for any confusion. I previously owned a mk1 octavia tour.

The noise is apparent pulling away gently. Not breaking traction, anywhere between half a turn of steering to full lock.

Checking level / changing oil would be a first start wouldn't it? It is a combined transaxle isn't it, same oil used for both.

 

Although, I agree at 55k its not a lot of miles and vw always say sealed for life but it is where I would start if you can't physically detect anything with the cv joints. Like driving in a car park on full lock.

 

Can you hear the noise when underway on a smooth road and changing direction?

I only offered a suggestion for the MK1, what I thought the OP owned from his profile, on my computer screen I cannot see which section I am in and I am also partially sighted so when I read text what is around it does not register, so whilst the info may have been there to a fully sighted person when I clicked on the topic it may not have been visible to me, to compound matters I also have close to zero short term memory, I'm sorry that I have upset you, it was not my intention, I regret that you consider me a pedantic thing 99% of the time.

 

Regarding the traction control function it depends on what model of ABS controller is fitted (MK60 rings a bell?) and from studying the subject because I felt my MK2 was so poor compared to the MK1 I found that some models but not mine had the better ABS controller fitted as standard so it is not a black & white MK1 or MK2 subject and my suggestion could have been relevant to the OP but I see that he has now confirmed the grating happens when pulling away gently.
