Advice please; small-medium sized hatchback for my sister near Blairgowrie in Scotland

Featured Replies

My sister has had a small windfall and is looking for a small to medium hatchback car for local running about.  She lives in the hills north of Blairgowrie so poor weather performance is relevant.

She has been looking at Audi A3 / Golf / Fabia models and has found the one below; a bit over her preferred budget of £2k but it looks clean enough.

Any advice out there, please?

(BTW @AnnoyingPentium, @Breezy_Pete, @roottootplus any others welcome to leap in :)

Under 2k would get you just about any Mk1 Fabia. Mine was £1495 with 52k miles. :)

My wee 1.2 is quite well planted by way of handling, seems to stick to the road nicely, and was an absolute gem even in the horrible conditions that we get here, sometimes. Such as snow.

No real performance though... or maybe that's an issue specific to mine, but the 1.4 16v petrol or even a diesel would be a decent shout.

Steering wheel has seen better days.

Unremarkable MOT history, although I'd probably ask about the exhaust - was the 'major leak' welded up, or was a new section fitted.  Looks like it lost 85k miles last year (a simple typo I'd think) 😁

Gaz

How about an Octy Scout ? the 4wd might be an advantage in the winter months ?

Best find one from a neighbour or adverts in the shops in Blairgowrie.

She does not need to go far to find a car beyond Perth, Dundee and area.

Blairgowrie & area has plenty cars usually for sale but the demand is high for low priced ones now.

She just needs a Smallish FWD car and with good tyres for the winter so good if already fitted.

I will see if i can spot anything in her budget.

The roads get ploughed, if the snow gates at Blairgowrie or Glenshee are closed they are closed.

AWD is not necessary and any good ones are snapped up anyway.   Flooding is more of an issue than snow.

I am not seeing anything really that is not a bucket of crap.

Lots of cars reserved and garages / used car sales locally at a bit more money.

A £2,500 'asking price' 2009 car not far away at a Garage (trader) that is has a good reputation is less of a gamble / lottery.

Peugeot 207 1.4 Verve 3d 74 BHP. 74,240 miles.

I will just link the garage as i phoned someone i know that was looking for a car but they do not want a 3 door.

This is a clean car i would have no worries about any of my family driving.

EDIT / PS

The Front Subframe Corrosion is something needing looked at and obviously the seller is a MOT Station.

But then any car from Scotland or elsewhere at this money needs close inspection and bought with a NEW FULL MOT.

Low miles. Serviced, tyres, MOT etc etc.  Much Cheapness.

Avoid these like the plague IMO/IME.

Horrid little cars, at least from a reliability point of view.

That's purely anecdotal evidence, mind you, but I've known a few folk who've had issues with those.

Need some spikes on the wheels for Blair 😉

Neighbour had a good experience with Cazoo  but not sure if they operate with cars that sort of price.

In general I'd suggest avoiding anything French, it's not a joke they just don't last that well. I had a 2004 Renault and it basically disintegrated over the 4yr I had it, and that was from new.
Anything that age will break and need repaired so aim for something that is easy to get parts for and plenty people know how to fix. VAG group is always a good bet there.
Toyota can last well into old age and high miles but repairs are a little more expensive.
