TDI MPG shocking 😳

Featured Replies

Just wondering what MPG people are getting in vRS TDI, I'm getting 30mpg.. very bad for a diesel!

It's the DSG

Crikey! Would of expected it to do better than that. How hard are you driving it? Which version is it? (PD/CR?). Is it remapped? Mileage?

That's sensible driving not sure what version how do I find out and what is the difference, not known of its remapped and 80k

If it is a mk3 vrs diesel it must be common rail injection surely.

I don't have a diesel so no direct experience.

That seems low though, regens and city / urban stop start driving will hurt consumption.

What's the driving mix? Does it improve dramatically on A road / motorway journeys?

Have you reset both mpg trips? There is the long term and current mpg. There is one that says since refill but that only resets when fuel goes in. If you have not reset any of those it will show lower than ordinary mpgs.

Mine is mapped and I get about 50mpgs on a 6 mile drive to work. Most of that is at either 30mph or 50mph. On the motorway it goes upto 55mpgs +

@bmask90

Some clues on length of trips from cold start that gives 30 mpg or an indicated 30 mpg would be a good idea and what the displayed MPG is on trips of maybe over 40 miles and would it use an actual gallon of diesel to do 40 miles in one trip.

?

How many miles has the car done?

Have you had a look in the airbox at the condition of the airfilter?

EDIT.

I see now 80,000 miles.

How long have you had the car?

PS.

?

Has the car had the DSG serviced twice now as the DSG oil changes are due @ 40,000 miles.

I remember a Briskoda post years back where a mk3 2.0tdi estate owner was happily getting 50 to 60 mpg on his commute and then he swapped with his wife's small petrol car for a month or so.

She remarked after a while that it needed refuelling so when he refueled he was amazed at the poor consumption (much worse than the OP's).

She was only doing short local runs and there must have been constantly interrupted regens.

Normal consumption resumed when the cars were swapped back.

I'd like to know what you're seeing on the instantaneous MPG readout?

Can you potter about gently and get a high MPG on very light throttle trundling along at 30-40MPH, with a return to "----" when you lift the throttle completely off?

When you accelerate, does it drop down to sensibly high MPG of, oh I dunno, somewhere between 10-20MPG, and then quickly shoot up to higher MPG when you are at a steady speed?

What's your instantaneous MPG at a steady 50MPG on the level? (I'd expect that to fall somewhere between 50-70MPG. I've pulled those numbers out of thin air, but they sound reasonable to me.)

Beyond that, tyre pressure would be something to double-check, as would verifying your tyre pressure gauge is accurate.

EDIT: Also, I'd be inclined bung some Millers DieselClean (or whatever it's called now, PowerPlus?) in and give it an Italian tune-up to try and cook the cobwebs out of the system, if any are present.

How long have you had the car is very pertinent: Is this a new problem, or has your MPG always been like this?

At 80K miles, I'm wondering how "full" the DPF is. Can you get that checked?
