you can probably do it with a hydaulic press.

but this is what i do.

get a long piece of m10 stud and some m10 nuts and washers.

and you need a large flat washer which is bigger than the bore that the bush fits into but with a hole in the centre.

put the stud through the centre of the bush then put the stud into the mounting hole for the bush then using the nuts and washers described above so that there is a nut on each end of the stud and that the large washer is bearing onto the outer edge of the beam., use to spanners to gradually tighten it which will force it in.

use a little bit of teflon grease to make it easier.

i'm sorry, i've real difficulty explaining this!!! but you should be able to work it out.

Thanks Tom. I was going to get my trusty local mechanic to do the replacements for me, but he doesn't have the correct removal tool and apparently it's really really expensive from VW.

I'll pass this info onto him, but I don't think he'll like it - he's the sort of guy who has to do it ultra-properly to be happy. Not saying the method above won't work, but you know what I mean ;)
