Drivers side window switches

Featured Replies

Hello,

Today the drivers side window switches in my 66 plate Superb III have "failed". By failed, for lack of a better descriptive mode all the switches have gone "limp and floppy". Almost seems like there's a power issue?

Before I go and attempt to extract any useful help from the local Skoda garage (who're normally less than helpful) I figured I'd post here and see if there's anything obvious/this is a common issue. A quick search suggests possibly the wiring loom in the door?

The mirrors still adjust and the windows still work (both with the other switches and the key).

Thanks

That will be a fairly straight forward diagnosis - The switch pack has failed and needs replacing.

No coding or anything needed so just plug and play a new or second hand part.

If you have a decent trim removal tool you can even do it without removing the door card

Ok, didn't think it'd be that simple as all the switches seem to have gone limp, seemed more like an electrical thing rather than hardware but very happy to be wrong if that's the case! I did go a bit down the rabbit hole, seems to be common that the wiring loom in the door frays but this looks like a significantly cheaper option!

Part number 5G0959857C?

The wiring in doors isn’t nearly as much a problem on mk3 as older versions.

also how would a broken wire cause a physically loose button?

the bottom of the switch pack has most likely fallen out meaning all the switches will of gone limp. Change the switch pack

Roger, will try that.

The reason I thought it might be electrical was that the switch for the passenger side went about a week ago and was bouncing around when any of the other switches were used, like it was getting shorted or something.

Worst case I've not lost anything by replacing the unit though so will give that a go.

Forgot to say in previous post, thank you for your help. Much appreciated. Now I just need to find the part number for my missing bit of window trim and the car will be good as new.

Had this on mine recently, the white plastic toggles between the switch and circuit board disintegrated.  When ordering make sure you get the right switch panel, mine was 5G0 959 857 D WHS.  This is the one with the large 'disable the windows' button.  The other one has the child lock enable/disable buttons on it.

Replaced mine today, the one that has the child lock enable/disable buttons on it. For once a 5 minute job that took less than 5 minutes!

Can someone show how they got the switch plate out of the door please?  Does it just lever out or do you have to take the internal door card off the door?

I have to change the round switch that operates the door mirrors.

Many thanks

You will need thin trim remove Tools.

Mask Blue area with tape in case trim tool slips and scratches plastic.

Orange arrows, start here. Once this area is lifted you can slot a credit card in there to keep the gap where are you use your trim removal tools on the next next stage.

Green arrows next.

Blue arrow, trim just hooks under here, no prying required.

It will then lift out allowing you to disconnect the two block connectors for the windows and mirrors.

It is a tight fit but will pop up as you work your way around.

I have a problem that those switches(they feel to be all together) vibrate inside the frame and make noise when there is music or speaking on the radio.
Is there a known fix for that situation?

Hello gents,

Reactivating this query.

Following your excellent instructions @Steviedakota , I have managed to lift out the assembly containing the electric window and mirror switches. The problem I now have is trying to firstly disconnect the "loom" from the electric windows part. I don't want to yank too hard and was trying to pry in the area marked with the blue arrows or jiggle the red part marked as was uncertain if it was a kind of latch. But no success. How would I go about disconnecting it?

Secondly, the entire circuit board in the switch box popped out of the "box" containing the windows switches and I am battling to remove the now empty box as the three or four clips holding it into the assembly are all bloody tight and I don't want to destroy them or they won't hold the new switch assembly in place.

What am I doing wrong as 5 minutes is already 15+

The endpost is near but I need to first:
1. Remove wiring loom from old circuit board to plug in the replacement switchs; and

2. Unclip the "latches holding the now empty faulty plastic box in place so the new one slides in and clips into place.

Thanking you in advance whoever answers.

EB

From memory, the red part is a latch. You need to prise it up and the connector can then be easily removed.

In my case the carrier casing that holds the fitted switch assembly in place had snapped near some of the locating lugs which meant that whenever the drivers side switch was pressed it failed to fully connect. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't

I superglued the casing back together & it now works perfectly.

I have joined the forums (which I have found very useful previously) to get help on this part number as my driver's side master switch now has a broken button just for the driver's window so I need to change the whole switch pack. I have tried to look for the part number mentioned but have not had much luck sourcing it. Can anyone please help with getting the part number right and also how best to source it?

I have a 2017 Superb III, right hand drive and am located in Sydney, Australia.

Hello and welcome. I hope you have an easy job repairing this. As quoted above by @CBas , this is the Part No. 5G0959857 This here

I searched and found it Amazon.co.uk but I am certian you can try on the Aus site. There seem to be C/D/G and B versions. I got the C. Other vehicles it claims to fit different models across the VW group range such as the GTi Mk7.

You will also need to get yourself a cheap trim kit to prise the switch out of the door trim. I found it to be a lot longer than 5 minutes and was a two person job. Getting it out following the excellent instructions from @Steviedakota was the easy part. I struggled getting the catch to release.

For clarity, that red bit is a clip and can slide up. Get someone to cup there hands underneath or it will eventually pop off and fall into the door and down an open hole 🙄

Then the wiring loom can eventually be prised out of the socket (also took me a while) with a screwdriver or a trim tool. You will then need the second person to help you to press in those plastic clips to allow the entire switch unit to come out of the frame. After that it was easy.

Clip switch into the frame, insert the wiring loom into the recently vacated socket and gently put the entire unit back into the door handle.

Good luck

Thanks for the summary @EssexBoi . Without having taken my controls out I wanted to know how the spare part would fit because if you can see by a screenshot of my controls below:

A a screenshot of the replacement part (non genuine - I am trying to source a genuine one)

Do the window controls separate out from the rest of the unit i.e. the mirror controller? I am just wary of damaging anything else unwittingly or sourcing the wrong replacement part. I was also concerned if it matters if my vehicle is right hand drive and affects the part I get?

It is separate, clicks into the plastic surround

Yep. I wondered about that too. They look like one part but they do separate. When you prise it out from the bottom following the instructions it all works out as the window switches just drop out of the frame when you release the clips (in theory but getting the clips to release was a two man job).

Great thanks @Danoid and @EssexBoi . I've ordered the part from Amazon UK. Should be here in a week along with the trim kit. Will post an update on how it went!

Hi all - as promised I am providing an update on how my replacement went with some pictures. TLDR is it was a success!

Here are some photos of me removing the old switch and then putting in the new one.

I did end up breaking one clip during removal but it didn't cause any issues putting it back in and is fully flush.

Also here is the old, broken part and you can see the circled broken arm/rocker for the button which was causing me the problem.

Hopefully this helps someone else in the future. Thanks again for all the help in sorting this out!

Well done. Glad you got there in the end. Theoretically quite easy. Removing the wiring loom and the those infernal clips was the main issue only in that I didn't want to break anything (and I also broke two clips!) but that was it.

If anyone has the same problem, try it out.
