I drive 100 miles a day, 50 out and 50 back home. 90% is motorway. Speed between 50 - 70mph with average 63mpg. Based on tables above I think I'm definitely in the variable/extended oil service catagory.

The system only updates in every 100km*

VCDS will tell you which you are on currently if you interrogate instrument cluster.

*Not sure if the adjust to every 100 miles for UK measurements (I know it should increment in 100's)

You are, but with the minimal cost and hassle of changing the oil perhaps the question is: is that the best strategy? The variable regime is "ok" and in part designed to please fleet operators who will be selling the car on after 3 years, so it doesn't matter if the "variable" regime is slighly worse for the car. If you want to keep the car for a long time I suggest that going to fixed makes sense despite your usage pattern. Well that is what I did anyway! I do the occasional town trip but most of my mileage is an 85 mile trip (to the gliding club) or a 425 mile trip (to the canal boat).

I get the car serviced every 6 months which equates roughly to 12,500 miles, so somewhere in-between the two schedules. This is good enough for me.

As for doing it myself, I no longer have a driveway or any off road parking which makes things a bit more difficult. An intermediate service is costing me about £130 and £240 for the major service + MOT. Not too painful at the moment.

What is actually getting done at a Major Service over and above that at an intermediate Service?

A pollen filter maybe, more looking and seeing and reporting because not much of that was done at the intermediate.

These are old prices, and what might have been charged regardless of cabin filters, plugs, air filters or fuel filters being replaced.

They charged the money, spent less time, used less parts but somehow managed to take the cash and VAT and get to the same cost.

Which is why my car hasn’t been to a dealer since the warranty expired. Lots of checking in these schedules, not much action. That is because there is not much to do.
