Stop/start system and battery issues

Featured Replies

I will tell you about my experience and I hope it can help you in relation to the start and stop,

I have a Fabia mk3 2021, bought in May of that year, the first year it worked well all winter, then this year in the winter it was colder, It has cost more to get the start/stop working, but I also made some modifications to my car, such as GPS, LED Lights, Sound Amplifier and Dash Cam, and now that we are coming out of winter (chile) the start/stop started to work correctly despite all the extras that I have, where affirming everything that the colleagues here indicate, the extreme weather is what most harms the system and you should also take into consideration your journeys, if they are more than city or highway Since it depends more on one or the other, your battery will spend better time charging

@gruger thanks for reporting back and your comments.

A few notes for you to consider for your issue, according to Google Chile doesn't get extreme cold or even cold winters, certainly not compared to the UK anyway but they could be additional electric load on for longer in winter which will lower the battery but the battery and charging system should be able to cope unless the load is well above what is normal and/or lots of very short journeys where the battery and charging system can not catch up.  Between 10°C and 30°C (50°F and 86°F) is best for battery charging.

If the battery is low in charge often (depending on the journey and circumstances) just driving the car to charge the battery will be insufficient for lasting effect, best to recharge the battery with a suitable battery charger.  Despite the start/stop now working I would recommend you check your car battery's state of charge (and charging system if you can) and/or recharge your battery with a suitable battery charger, avoid fast charging aim for at least overnight lower recharge.

As well as large loads depleting the battery small constant loads can add up over time, such as if your dashcam has a constant live (whether it is recording or not) so how that is wired may be worth checking.   The sound amplifier depends on how power hungry it is in use but it might also perhaps have a constant live(?) and so battery drain.

You would probably need a lot of LED lights to be noticeable as they are very low load usually and GPS generally use very little.

Thank you very much for your comment,

Indeed, Chile is not an extreme climate in winter or at least not where I live, at least this winter the lowest was -2 ºC, on the other hand, almost all the extras that I have in my car stop working or consume when disconnected the ignition, only the GPS is always consuming, but as you indicate it consumes very little.

The state of my battery according to the brand's workshop, was fine, this in mid-May that I have annual service they indicated this to me, my journeys are very short 30km per day in the city, so I don't give a good charge to the battery, sometimes when I take trips the star / stop works very well

Assuming (always dangerous) you car's systems and battery are all working as they should it may pay you well to consider using a suitable battery maintenance charger overnight  a few times a week to help top up your battery and take some strain away from your charging system.

I would expect more than 2 years from a battery but if your car's monitoring system was faulty before perhaps that has helped to weaken your battery - however, I am not you with your car travelling as you do.  If you are not able to regularly recharge your battery then at battery replacement I would look for a high quality battery with as much Ah and CCA as possible that can be fitted.

Good luck.

Update:

Car is almost finished at the mechanic now. Diagnostics show that the start/stop system is inactive.

Mechanic tried changing the battery and taking it for a drive, start/stop system still refuses to work.

My battery came back as still okay. No idea what’s going on.

Suggested take it back to Skoda and push them to fix it. We know how that’ll go down…

How about buy a battery monitor and record what is happening which you can then show the results to the Dealership or perhaps identify any issues with your car or use.

Just one example, there are other types. - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/134074196280
