Coolant Pipe Leaking

Featured Replies

Went on my usual run in the Octy and got a coolant warning light. Got it home and checked underneath, found a coolant pipe behind the engine running just above the right transmission arm, running behind a metal bracket. Someone did a botched job with Jubilee clips and extra piping. I’ve got an appointment with my local garage this Friday, but am wanting to bring them the pipe myself so that they can just fit it on the day. My only problem is I’m unsure of the part number for ordering it up. After looking up a diagram for the cooling system it’s not made anything clearer. So I’d really appreciate any help or knowledge on the matter.

What engine code?

It’s a 1.6 TDI CAYCP56966

It's difficult to discern on a parts diagram as only the general layout is depicted without reference to other notable guide points.

I'm going on the basis that one end of the rubber hose slips over a metal pipe with an upturned "J" end, passes over a silver bracket and disappears somewhere over the right driveshaft inner joint.

If you could follow the rubber/metal line from end to end and let us know what 2 components it links.

So I had a look, I’m still not sure what component the piping is going into, but I did get some photos. So in the first photo it’s the middle pipe about an inch in diameter and this is in the left hand side of the engine bay. It then runs down the back of the engine to the right hand side behind a metal plate has a 90degree angled connection to a metal pipe that runs above the timing belt. The pipe then runs up the side of the car above the alternator where there’s a sensor plugged in and goes into the engine.

Sorry about the vagueness of the description, I’m a fairly new DIY’er

I think someone has bypassed the coolant flow to the EGR cooler, probably due to a leak.

In the 3rd photo in your original post you can see an open hose fitting on the EGR cooler, this would accept the short section of rubber hose (1K0121101CP) from the end of the J shaped metal tube.

There is no corresponding part number for the leaky piece as it has been an improvised repair/modification.

On the assumption the EGR cooler has a leak hence the modification and you don't want unnecessary expense, try tightening the hose clamps or source a length of rubber hose to replace the whole section.

You're probably better explaining this to the garage and letting them deal with it, it shouldn't be a problem for them.

Thanks for the help I really appreciate it! So would it be better for the engine to keep the EGR bypassed or to replace it and have original routing? I’m guessing there would be a general increase in the wear and tear of the internals if I left it the way it was?

Just because if there is; it may be another reason - apart from the lack of oil changes - as to why 11 of 16 engine tappets had play and had to be replaced!

I bought it from my uncle who said he got it remapped but he never went into detail about what he was actually up to.
