With there being 2 Talex systems available, both offering the same thing apart from one offering a little extra with School Positions, SOS Postioning, Compass Bearing, etc, which is the best one to go for. The more expensive offers average speed reading and trip meter but i've got these on the car and schools are easy to spot, so the only real advantage is the SOS postioning in case of breakdown. Is it worth paying the extra and having the few extra features or should i just go for the cheaper one??

The Talex Lite doesn't include subs either. That said it probably is a good buy.

Have you seen my post regarding discounts?

Yeah, it's kind of what prompted me to ask which was best.:D

This might help: Autoexpress Mega-Test

Edit: My opinion for what it's worth is that they are both good, it just depends on whether or not you want/need those other features. I have the main Talex but rarely use all it's features.

The Lite cost me £79.99 from Comet, then I paid £34.99 for 12 months subscription, a total of £115.98.

The full fat versions costs (I think) around £139.99 with 6 months subs then £29.00 for the next year.

Up to you really, the Lite does save you about £40 in the long run.

There are 3 year subs available too ...

I'm thinking about getting the Talex Lite myself:thumbup: . As has been previously mentioned I can't see myself using the additional features of the non-lite version.

The only thing thats stopping me currently is I don't really want a sticky pad stuck to the dash permanently for it to sit on. ...does anyone know if they do a windscreen mounting kit?

The mounting is a nice and unobtrusive magnet. Drop the unit on it and away you go.

There is a screen mount but IMHO the magnet is better.

so the only real advantage is the SOS postioning in case of breakdown.

the RAC can find your position by your mobile phone signal , after they've asked you whether they can do it or not , so the SOS feature is a bit redundent anyway , i would go for the cheaper version , but i really want the laser detection but neither does that :(

Anyone know what the actual difference is between the two units. Ie, would a software upgrade turn a Lite into a full version, or are there hardware bits and bobs which make it different? :D

Chris

I think the hardware is probably the same. As to whether you'd be able to get the flash files and then upgrade a lite who knows.

Talex do a screen mounting kit, see below:

Screen_Mounting_Kit.jpg

Screen Mounting Kit

Includes swan neck mounting kit with suction cup and magnetic base complete with an extended 4m power lead. For vehicles with UV-coated windscreens or as an alternative to dashboard mounting.

£21.26 (Exc. VAT)

£24.99 (Inc. VAT)

The only feature i'd really want from the full Talex version is the SOS Postioning but unless i'm planning on driving into the middle of nowhere, not keeping an eye on my road maps and then breaking down, i can't see the need to have it. I'm not with the RAC as i've got 3 years free subscription to the AA when i bought the car.

Talex website prices

Talex Lite:

Unit - £89.99,

3 Year Subscription - £59.99,

Screen Mounting Kit - £24.99 (Not Sure About This),

Total Price - £174.97 (with Mounting Kit),

- £149.98 (Without Mounting Kit).

Talex:

Unit - £149.99,

3 Year Subscription - £59.00,

Screen Mounting Kit - £24.99 (Not Sure About This),

I can't understand why you would want a screen mount tbh.

I'm only toying with the idea of getting a screen mount, so thought i'd include it in the price. Is the magnetic pad that noticeable?

I've been driving for 7 years and have never had any points and only been pulled by the police twice, first time for a passenger sticking their fingers up at a dog van and the second time for wheel spinning off an island in the wet and on a slope, so i've never been pulled for speeding.

Do you find you become reliant on the detector to tell you of approaching speed cameras or do you still look out for them yourself?

I'll try and get a picture of the mounting later.

I don't rely on it no - In fact it's the opposite, it just gives you a friendly reminder of a danger ahead. The fact that it tells you the current limit is great - no searching for signs to confirm that you think you are doing the right speed!!!

That is an advantage, especially with some of the roads round here. Some roads will have the speed limit signs posted every few metres and others, you'd be lucky to see a sign or it's behind trees/bushes.

Cheers for that link.

Unfortunately, i'm going to have to run the wires loose until i can talk someone into fitting it for me as i'm not very good at, well, anything!!! :D

i think everybody should have a device in their car that tells them what the speed limit is on the road their on , that way i wouldn't have to put up with kn#bheads in front of me slowing down to 50mph or less on a dual carriageway where the national speed limit applies i.e. 70mph on dual carrigeway and 60mph on a single

I overtook someone in the middle lane of the M5 yesterday and needed to come off at the next junction, so moved across and got stuck behind a lorry doing about 50. The car in the middle lane wasn't catching up at all!!! Middle lane hoggers.

Would or has anyone bought a Talex off someone on eBay??

They're quite cheap on eBay but there's just something about it that stops me from spending over

Can it be mounted in the cubby hole in the dash or does HAVE TO go on the dash top?
