Replacement radio/satnav/infotainment suggestions for a dead Amundsen pleas

I’ve killed my wife’s radio.  Touchscreen failed and I found a replacement on eBay but neglected to check in advance how bl**dy difficult it is to replace just the digitiser rather than the whole screen unit.  Screen got wrecked in the process.

Cheapest repair option (given that replacement screens seem to be unobtainable) would seem to be an after market double DIN system.

What I don’t know is whether we’ll lose the visual indication of obstructions when reversing and use of the steering wheel controls.  My wife has an iPhone so I’m guessing a pure Android head unit won’t talk to her phone (which we would like it to do).

Ultimately I’m looking for the nearest “like for like” replacement that will retain as much of the original functionality as possible without costing an arm and a leg.

Any suggestions?

And can anyone tell me how to edit the subject line? 😉

Report your own post, and there will be option to add some manual text, an admin will come along and edit post.

I think because this is your 2nd post, you will not be able to edit things just yet.

You could try calling Ant on 07979723977.

He's in West Midlands and does a repair service on Amundsen2 units and last I read, he had Amundsen2 screens.

He has had v.good reviews here and on YOC.

Kenwood DMX8020DABS has wireless CarPlay and Android Auto. There is a Double Din fitting kit that contains a cable to connect to steering wheel controls. Not sure the parking sensors work with this unit.

Unit cost - £650  - It is a mechless unit, meaning NO CD PLAYER!

Fitting kit - £136 - was £99 just last week!

If you're not bothered about wireless Carplay and Android Auto, you could go for the 8019DABS model, possibly around £100 less, but finding them, now that Kenwood have released the 8020, is another matter!

If you really need something for rear parking, you could look at getting a lowline or highline rear camera, but the fitting would be a long process, and labour charge would be in the region of £200-250.

I've had a labour cost for infotainment replacement quoted to me at £150, but I think it's easy enough to do yourself, as you've already probably taken the trim off, and unscrewed the broken unit out.

My first port of call in your situation would be to call Ant, as mentioned in another reply. He is highly recommended on the Amundsen repair work.
