Hi all, my trust old 07 1.9tdi turbo went pop yesterday.

Turbo oil seals have gone I think.

Put foot down, pop noise followed by loads of smoke and the engine cut out shortly afterwards.

Got it recovered home and I've had a quick look and intercooler pipes are full of oil.

 

I'm going to get a mechanic to look at it.

 

What are people's thoughts, will the engine be scrap? Hydrolocked by oil and internal damage or will it just be a case of cleaning intercooler and hoses, new turbo and fresh oil ?

I think your mechanic will be best placed to advise you since they will see things first hand.

Dunno. I've seen 2 turbo engines that went full James Bond smoke screen and all they needed was new/rebuilt turbos.

Intercooler pipes always have some oil in "full" would be impressive. As long as you haven't run it dry of oil, the engine will probably be fine.

 

The pop noise makes me think it might have just popped a boost hose off somewhere. Have you been round all the connections? Might not be that, but, optomism and happy thoughts.
