Thinking of buying a new Karoq 1.5 TSi DSG thoughts please

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Looking at buying a brand new Karoq 1.5 tsi with DSG auto, am I mad or what?

Up till March this year had a VW Tiguan 2.0 Diesel with DSG from new in 2018 and have only done 15k in nearly 4 years. That car has gone and we were very happy with it except for a failed ECU which was replaced when just out of warranty and would have cost over £1k had it not been a motability car so they paid the bill.

We are no longer are under the motability scheme so want a new car with our own money and the budget covers one of the Karoq's. Want petrol this time round as we do low mileage but want to know if the Karoq is a car that is reliable and with no foibles to worry about. I have done a bit of reading and understand there was a problem with the 1.5 tsi engine (Kangaroo cold starting issues) a while back but understand this has been fixed?

It's a Karoq or VW T-Roc or Seat Ateca that we are looking at all of course by VAG so I guess pretty similar cars in design and engineering. I am 70 yrs old and this car will be a keeper for at least 3 yrs (while under manufacturers warranty) and then if we are still in the market for a replacement will go electric.

We will be looking to buy in November and will pick up something from stock rather than ordering a factory model for which deliveries can't be guaranteed over the last year or so with most cars. There seems a few about at present with £2-3k off list which is surprising with the shortage of cars at present.

We currently have a VW ID4 electric since March which we love but it has to go back in November (motability car) and we could buy it but they want £40k which is outside my budget (£30k max).

Cheers

Keith

There are no more known problems with a Karoq as there are with any other car you may buy.

Kangarooing?  You said it yourself - the posts you read were a while back and would have applied to VW and SEAT 1.5tsi of that period too.  Problem with cars from late 2019 onwards are few and far between.

Prices - I too notice they're knocking off more money now that supply is coming thru. For instance if you look at a broker site like DriveTheDeal, an Ateca 1.5 SE Tech DSG retails for £30400 but some dealer is offering it for £26000 if you buy via PCP.  So deals are defo starting to pick up again.

I thought kangarooing only applied to manuals.  My 2018 DSG never showed any signs.

tom

I recently took delivery of a new Seat Ateca Xperience with the 1.5 petrol engine mated to the 7 speed DSG and it is great - no signs of kangarooing (unlike a MK III Octavia I bought in 2017 with the 1.5 petrol engine and manual gearbox).  The transmission is smooth and responsive and so far, fuel economy has exceeded my expectations.

While I was out today we called in at a Skoda and VW dealer and had a look over and sat in both the Karoq and T-Roc models. The Karoq felt that bit more roomy inside which surprised me as I thought both cars were the same size.

I am going back for a test drive of the Karoq in a week or so to see how it drives, It should be similar to the Tiguan I guess which I was more than happy with when I had one up till March.

It will be interesting to see how the 1.5 tsi performs compared to the 2.0 diesel I had before.

Apologies - need to correct that because I was wrong. £750 of that is only if you already own a SEAT so the discount would be approx £3600

@OldKaroqThat is good because no way they all had the issue or they would all of required the recall action and software updates.

If 100% had done it the poo would really of hit the fan.

?

Was your first one part of the Recall Action one of the many that were not?

No, no recall action. No problems at all, from day 1. Thats one reason I bought the same model car for a second time.

I would advise the OP to get one - the new one is slightly better than the previous model, and uses a little less fuel.

I imagine some forum posts are made by owners reporting a problem, asking advice then they disappear. So most owners that don't join Briskoda have no problems.

It was a DfT/  DVLA / DVSA Safety Critical Recall.

It is a series of vehicles that had Software / Engine Management issues.

It is not an Internet Myth or overblown on forums as VW Group would like people to believe.

It was getting 1.5 TSI's Certificated for the WLTP  & RDE.  They messed up.

They need to own it, make sales staff at Main Dealerships aware, do press releases & make an explanation to owners and potential owners.

That is then 'Simply Clever'.

But that is not how the VW Group operate.   They deny deny deny and eventually do something, and it is then 'Only the few',  and only a few complaints.

The dropped Das Auto after the Defeat Device revelations and it was supposed to be 'Honest in the best policy'.

I assume a new 2022 model would not need a recall as cars made this year would already have the problem corrected at manufacture.

cheers

Keith

Absolutely.

All well now, all past issues resolved.

Things as they should be to get through the WLTP / RDE2 and to actually drive well on the road.

Any new issues that might occur after 3 years with 2022/23 cars will be known from 2025.  So fingers crossed there are none, and if owners report snagging faults the Dealers will report them to HQ and the factory.

For some read most :D

Few people sign up to any forum to say they're happy with a product. And I suspect when they're given advise or the dealer fixes the problem then they disappear. People are only interested in moaning.

Of course it's not helped by those who dish out advice and constantly bleet on about the past problems which has no relevance to what the OP asked.

Keith - To reiterate, there's nothing whatsoever to worry about with a new Karoq, or rather nothing more than any other car for sale on the market.

Some had to get rid of their cars after months of hassle. They even lost money to get out of them.

They did come and ask the questions, raised the issues and luckily many then got their issues resolved.

Those with no issues & that believe they are an internet myth are just like the Employees many had to deal with in Dealerships.

'Never heard of that'.  'Overblown on the internet' People only go to forums to moan'.  'They all do that, it is a characteristic'.

VW will fix it, they are the biggest manufacturer in the world.  They had the best engineers in the world.  Then they left.

@kodiaqsportline

All that IT / Software stuff on the various models of Skoda & VW group cars is overblown, fiction, not happening any more than with other manufacturers.

Well actually it is since VW took the IT in house and co-cked up.

PS

the post by @Sanqharwas the reason for replies, and the relevance.

Internet myths from people that 'thought' something, yet were wrong.

or those that post, ' I have never seen', or 'I have never heard of'.

Don't blame me!

personally for the money id stay on the motability scheme, costs you 250 a month and all you have to spend is fuel where as private ownership will see a finance or pcp deal because i certainly would not buy outright with the 2nd hands that will flood the market soon when all new ones arrive driving down the value even further plus youve then got the cost of insurance so while you have been on a motability contract you would of lost any no claims bonus (i made this mistake) tyres, servicing, breakdown costs as well

We would stay on the motability scheme if we could, it's possibly being forced onto us as it's my MIL that has the award and she has been in hospital for 7 weeks now and if she is still in hospital after 3 months (another 6-8 weeks from now) MB want the car back hence us having to buy a car ourselves.

We can but hope she is discharged from hospital as she is well fed up being in there this long but it's not looking too likely so are just looking at the options for now.

@mrvinylWelcome.

PIP Motability component is £64.50 a week, so full allowance to pay a car from Motability is £258 each 4 weeks. It is £279.50 a month.

Still good value,

but then unless a low or nil advance payment which is mostly on EV's now unless a car manufacturers want rid of that is at least £10,062 over 3 years.

That is all in with Servicing, no VED, insurance included.

You do not need to lose your NCB anymore while on a 3 year lease or as a named driver with Motability.

Insurers will look at your Accident history or claims and might allow 5 years of not holding a personal pollcy. This has been the case for quite a few years now.

I first went with Motability in 1978 and have had 11 cars in that time, some on lease and 2 bought using HP when they did that.

I used to need my own cars as well as 12,000 miles a year was not enough, going to 20,000 miles a year was a game changer.

I have done 35,000 miles in my EV in 26 months and am still under £150 in what it has cost me in Electricity & 2 CPS cards.  They were £20 each.

@WolfiefromWolves

Have you looked at EV's like a MG or even a Kia / Hyundai as an option?

.................................................................................................................

Motability SUV's in Petrols & Diesels might be available on the list.but the advance payments are a factor.

There are sometimes good deals in a quarter if they suit what anyone is after.

This is what the lower Advance payment ones are in the normal list this quarter.  Bottom list is from this Quarters Highlights.

Thanks for the heads up roottoot but if we loose the car due to the stay in hospital whilst the mobility allowance may be restored the ID4 will be gone unless we buy it after the 3 month grace MB allow under hospitalisation rules. Ordering another car through MB would be a waste of time as deliveries are 12 months on most cars now via MB and can't wait that long.

I have looked at possibly an MG4 but they are like gold dust right now as are most EV, don't like the other ev's from MG or the smaller ev's like Kona Corsa etc we need a larger vehicle (SUV style). That's why we are looking at the Karoq as it's similar to the Tiguan we had till last March and were very happy with that. I would prefer another EV but very few larger EV like our current  ID4 are anywhere near our budget of £30k.

We only do about 4k miles a year so whilst EV is cheap to run and a nicer drive they are quite a bit more money size for size than a petrol. However it evens out over 2-3 years, cheaper petrol to buy but more expensive per mile V more expensive to buy but cheaper to run per mile.
