Dealer requests my current car V5C

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm in the process of getting my new car it is a Volvo, initially wanted to trade in my current Skoda but then changed my mind and gonna sell it myself.

The dealer requested a copy of the front page of my V5C certificate with the Document reference number visible. They said it is just for the discount and admin as they need to know if that car is registered under my name. But that sounds strange as I'm not selling the car to them. By having that reference number anybody could change various services on DVLA website for my car. Should I give it to them? I tried with the obfuscate the number but they asked not to be.

Tell the salesperson to get on their bike.

If it's '..just for the discount and admin..' then they surely don't need it?

Gaz

as above, that sounds like a load of absolutely BS. .

I got a more specific explanation, it is for the credit check they do on my for financing the car. They need to know if I'm the owner of the car

They would not know you were the owner, only the Registered Keeper'.    As a proof of address it is OK, but like a Passport, not proof you actually live there.

Fair enough if they want to check your finances, and if a car has finance on it, but they can do that.

But they are not getting that car.

PS

I do get their backs up when i mention this is their full time job, are they waiting on training, or is their trainer!

IIRC the V5 specifically states that it is not proof of ownership.

Correct, I was involved in a case last year where the Registered Keeper was most definitely NOT the Legal Owner at the time, so requesting the V5C for proof of ownership is BS.
