Rusting Wheels?

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Ive noticed the inside of my wheels are starting to rust/ corrode and am just wondering what is the best action to take to get these looking good?

I’ve no experience with cars in general however would like to give this a go myself if it’s not too big a job.

Please see pics attached, thanks!

You need to remove your wheels then tidy up your discs / hubs if you want that to look better.  Wire brush / sand paper, rust treatment, paint etc.

?

Have you never had the wheels off to see how they are fitted, or serviced the brakes?

The insides of you alloy wheels what little of them can be seen in the photos look just fine.

Take a look at everyone elses brake discs, yours are no different.

Body dismorphia.

Cool, will give that a go

No never, the wheels are possibly rusted on and I don’t have proper axel stands at the minute to knock them off, so didn’t want to chance it.

The brakes were checked at last service by mechanic and he said they were okay.

That's not the wheels but the brake discs. If you don't have axle stands get at least 2 with pins, not screw threads, to adjust the height before going any further.

Now, if you are correct about the bolts being rusted in place, there are a number of things you can do. With weight on wheels one or more of 1 - 3 below:-

  1. Try tightening them up (yes I typed that right) to break the rust lock between the bolts and hubs.
  2. Use a proper dismantling lubricant such as Plus Gas (not Water Dispersant 40) to help break the rust lock.
  3. Undo them 1 turn, no more.
  4. Having tried 1 - 3 above, drive forward or backwards a few feet, no more than 6 feet, which will almost definitely break the lock and give the feel and sound of loose wheels.
  5. If 4 worked, jack the corner up, put it on an axle stand and remove that wheel. Remember that it will be on your head, literally, if the car's not supported at the next step.
  6. Use a wire brush and/or emery paper, and/or a hammer and cold chisel to remove rust from the disc centre and lip until happy or bored.
  7. Replace the wheel(s) removed using the supplied wheel brace. You don't need any more torque than that brace supplies.

He said wheels rusted on and not wheel bolts rusted in place.

The former is very likely with the hub location flange rusting within the alloy wheel, the latter is highly unlikely.

The way to deal with the former is to slacken the wheel bolts and roll the car forward half a revolution, it usually brakes the bond between wheel & hub.

@KenONeill thanks for the advice, following those steps is probably out of my comfort zone 🤣 By the time I have stands, brushes, paint etc bought it would probably be the same as getting someone to do it

I found a guy who said he would do it for €220, painting the drums and callipers so I’m just going to take the hit and get it done right I think 🤣

Loosening the wheels and driving a small bit is a brilliant idea however

@Skodaeire

What a lovely little earner for him.

That is a ridiculous amount of money.

You can get new discs fitted for that money.   You can paint the bits the pads do not touch before they are fitted.

🤣 I have literally 0 tools and less knowledge

By the time I have everything bought and hope the car doesn’t fall on my head there might be 50/100 in the difference

The mechanic that checked your brakes will replace them when needed.

Painting them pre winter is not the best time to do them.

Being sure the wheels come of is.

If painting,

Sand paper is available in Home Bargain shops for about £1, and a rattle can of silver paint / zinc / manifold paint is £5.99.

Surely not much more in Ireland in Euro.

You need to know how to remove wheels and that they will come off if you were to have a puncture.
