Soft/Light Pedals Mk4 vRS

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I finally collected my new Mk4 vRS DSG last month to replace a Mk3 vRS DSG (both petrol). I'm loving the new car but have one main niggle.

Both the brake and accelerator pedal feel very soft and unresponsive. Both appear to work fine, can put power down in decent amounts and the car seems to stop as expected but they amount of travel on the pedal needed to do either seems excessive. It certainly feels very different to the Mk3 vRS I chopped in. Today I drove the wife's 6 month old Kamiq and at the first stop I nearly put myself through the windscreen with how sensitive it's brakes were in comparison.

I've put about 500 miles on it so far an can't notice any change as the car has "bedded in" or if I swap to sport mode etc.

Has anyone else found the Mk4 like this or maybe something it needs to go back to the dealer for?

Thanks

I picked up my mk4 vRS DSG this month too and the brake pedal was the first thing I noticed too, a lot more travel than I'd have expected.  Tempted to take the car to a dealer and request for the brakes to be re-bleed.

I'm in the fortunate position to have two MK4 Octavia at home and both are like that

Thanks Both,

I'd already sent a quick message to the dealer so I'll see what they say but sounding like it's something I'm going to just have to get used to. Real shame as other than that (and the odd software hiccup) I'm loving the car.

@stephen1612 I thought about getting the brakes bled too but having tried pumping the brakes a couple of times while stationary there is no obvious change in pressure which I believe is the tell-tale sign of air in the system. (I'm certainly no mechanic)

Ho hum, fingers crossed after a few more miles it might tighten up a little,

The soft brake pedal is something I've come to live with after having the car a year and a half.

I assumed it was something to do with the way the ACC automatic braking had been implemented.

Had mine almost 18 months now and can't say i've ever noticed a problem with the brakes.

I also drive the wifes brand new Kia Sportage auto and can't see much difference.

It is worse than the 2014 Leon FR that I had alright

I also haven't noticed anything wrong with brake or gas pedal.

I also noticed the softness of the brakes on my 2021 VRS wagon.

It was particularly noticeable compared with our 2015 Golf Alltrack which is extremely sensitive.

However I find that the VRSs stopping ability is perfectly ok and after 18 months of driving I now prefer it to the VW and find the VW's brakes too grabby by comparison.

I had the same feeling of "soft" brake pedal in my new Octavia, but not for a moment did it feel unsafe; the braking is excellent - it only requires a longer travel of the pedal. Compared to my Renault daily-drive, it's a huge difference: the travel is a lot shorter in the Renault and the pedal is harder. That doesn't mean any of the two creates any discomfort, it's just the need two slightly "re-calibrate" my right foot when switching cars. It's most obvious when I park one and directly jump into the other one; otherwise I don't feel such a dramatic difference.

With the accelerator pedal I also have the feeling it's really artificial and "disconnected" from the car... That's why I keep the DSG in S, not in D; that changes not only the behavior of the gearbox, but also the feeling & response of the accelerator pedal. Indeed, when in D there are situations when you really press for 1-2-3 cm on the accelerator and there's no feedback from the engine. You really need to floor-it to get an instantaneous response. That never happens when DSG is in S. (to clarify: I'm referring to the S-mode of the gearbox, not to the Sport driving mode that also affects the engine and steering behavior)
