Westfalia Towbar Compatibility

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have scoured the forums and internet but can't seem to find a solution to this.

Recently I have purchased a 2014 Superb Mk2 Tour de France edition - great car and perfect for all my needs, but it did not come with the removable towbar. All the hardware, including wiring is there, but not the swan neck. I know what the item number is for the towbar, but they seem to be as rare as rockinghorse teeth, so I was wondering if anyone knows of any other Westfalia towbars that might fit the Superb, maybe a Yeti or Octavia Scout?

TIA

Rob

Ive got a westfalia on mine. Didnt come with the swan neck but the rest of it was there. Managed to get teh swan neck from an agent in northampton.

How much did that set you back? I'm the type of fella who squeaks when he walks, hence my desire to try and find something second hand....

if i remember rightly think it set me back a good couple of hundred quid. It did take a good few months to come in as its comes in from germany.

Crikey, never cheap is it? I have a Skoda dealer down the road from where I work so I’ll pop in there and see if they can help

I have a 2014 Tour de France too and have just installed a detachable Westfalia towbar.

Unfortunately, mine did not have the wiring so had to get a dedicated ECS wiring kit back to the fuse box as well.

The towbar I purchased was a Westfalia Vertical Detachable Towbar as I carry Ebikes on a carrier. The part number for mine is 317102600001 and it was sourced from The Towbar Store on Bay, which are an authorised Westfalia retailer. They also stock Witter and Towtrust towbars. If you are going for a detachable swan neck version, double check that it is suitable for the Superb 4X4 Estate.

Great car isn’t it!

I’m fairly sure that I have that kit that you have installed on your car, on my car as well, it’s just been a pain trying to find the right swan neck for the Superb. I’m guessing that those who own the swan necks are so happy with them, they don’t want to sell them maybe?

Yes, indeed it is!

Ah, I was assuming that you had the wiring but not the towbar metal beam that is bolted behind the bumper cover. I now see why you are having a problem sourcing the detachable bit of the towbar in swan neck version. You say you have the part number so was your  towbar beam factory fitted along with the wiring, or was it retrofitted?

I’m fairly certain it was factory fitted, and my thought process behind this is the cut out in the spare wheel foam section for a towbar - I’d guess that wouldn’t be something you’d do if you had it fitted aftermarket?

Its probably one standard wheel liner for all the accessories some of which may not be supplied dependant on the spec of the vehicle or in its country of origin.

Interesting, I hadn't considered this - you'd think that they'd leave the towbar with the car though!

^^^ Not when they know the value of them.

Anyone at any point can help them self to things from a car, the seller, the transporter, the dealer / trader.

Very good point, if I could find another one that was compatible, life would be so much easier, sadly just looking at pictures on the internet doesn't help

These things get lost or overlooked, when towing often the luggage compartment is full so when the swan neck is removed it might be put in the shed, garage etc.

There was no factory fit towbar on the Superb, it was a dealer fit option. It could be supplied with factory wiring prep which had the wiring harness fitted as far as the boot. Skoda OE towbar is made by Prof Svar.

As you know the item number (part number?), it maybe worth sending a message to The Towbar Store (https://www.thetowbarstore.co.uk/)

They deal with different towbar manufacturers so could be able to track down the relevant part for you.

Good luck!

Hi, I've just bought a TdF, it has a none working fixed towbar that needs replacing, I've had detachable Weatfalia towbars on other cars usually professionally fitted but in an attempt to save money I'm going to fit it myself. I'm pretty handy with tools and I have VCDS so can do the ECU adaptions. Can you give me any guidance, advice and tips for fitting please?

Much appreciated.

Dave

Hi Smart Pro

I managed to find a towbar from a Nissan Juke, and it fits perfectly, and seems to be the right lengths and angles etc - however I’m still wary of the appropriateness of it. Are you able to measure your towbar for me please? I’d like to make sure the height is alright, as I’m being roped into towing the missus’ horse in a few days time, and I’m worried that it won’t work!

Many thanks

Apologies for the delay.

Just measured it on the car and it is 12 inches from the back of the vertical attachment, to the front of the towbar ball. In terms of height, it is about 9 inches.

Hope this helps!

That towbar may not be strong enough to handle the Superb's towing capacity, and it's also probably not going to be a great fit. It's held in place on the Superb by 4 bolts that screw in from the sides through the wall of the channels the towbar is inserted into. The flanges of the towbar need to be snug to the outside of those channels or it won't be held properly when the bolts are tightened.
