Right Reverse Light Fault + wire gauge question.... New Here!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. New Here.

Just bought a used SK Fabia 2011.

The right tail light housing (facing the rear of the car) had a crack, so replaced it. Discovered the right reverse light is not working...

I've tested the bulb on both sides...
Swapped the electrical (loom?) between the connector and the light bulb sockets.

All the other lights work on the right side. The left side also all fine, including the left reverse light. (So can rule out the reverse light switch cause I get one!?)

It got dark, but tomorrow plan to test the connections again, and from the right reverse socket back to the loom connector and then if I must back through to the other wide...

It's really stumped me. Happy to have at least one working reverse light, but just don't know where to look being that all the other lights work just fine!

Worse case I thought I'd replace the wire from the far loom to the socket on the right side - would that be an 18 gauge wire?

thanks all around!

Martin

The mkII only has one reversing light (left side from rear) the other one drivers side is the rear fog light which works when you pulll the switch out sorry about that you have been barking up the wrong tree here, you can fit 2 reversing lamps but you need a lens fitting off a left hand drive and you'll need to wire up the rear fog lights to both rear lens nt really worth the potch to be honest

Martin, welcome, don't feel bad if you have made a mistake, just have a laugh about it, by coincidence I just made a mistake and the circumstances of my mistake have jollied me up, if you have made a mistake go the same way, no one got hurt and it can be seen as funny, if you want.

As well as here a good source of information about this car new to you is the 'Owner's Manual', reading it, and referring to it will give you a great deal of useful information about your car.  If you don't have the paper printed copy for any reason, or even if you have but also want an electronic copy, then you can get a pdf copy from the following link. - https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Models

Also just for info, you were correct in looking at the car from the rear of it facing forward and saying the right, or right hand side (rhs) as with the steering wheel (for UK) being on the right hence right hand drive (RHD).  This side is also sometimes referred to (in the UK) as offside, easiest way to remember this is that the passenger side is the nearside (N/S), the side nearest the kerb.  HTH.

Thank you! I had read about this and was caught in an internet rabbot warren...

That said, my registration 'book' says it's a 2011 Fabia SE TSI 1197cc - I am digging but is this the model? I don't see any 'MK II or III' references

Thanks again!

Thank you Nigel, I used that link to look up the VIN, and it says Fabia II

very hlpful.

So I am reckining this is indeed a 'MK II' ?

And, indeed a "Fabia SE TSI " would be a mk 2 or later from the trim level and engine badges.

FWIW, if you want extra light on the RH rear when reversing in the dark, you can (technically illegally) use the rear fog with the single reversing light. Round about 1985 my Dad had an Au'tin Oxymoron (Maestro), and using the rear fogs on it for reversing in the dark (like the Thistle Centre multi-story) was essential.

OOOOOOOKAY.

Nothing makes you feel old like a car made since 1979. (My first in the USA was a 1974 Ford Thunderbird deluxe which sat 8 comfortably and had an 8 cylinder truck engine. 20mpg!)

Thank you all again. It helped to re-check the bulb which was out.

all this started when I got a replacement light lens housing cause some numpty had cracked the old one.

With ONE (!) reverse light...I'mma use the hazards in car parks. I hope my green "P" (never bothered to get my UK licence til now, after 20 years) alerts folk!

Am really grateful to find this forum and you all - I actually love this motor and plan to tinker like a pro-pensioner (not quite there yet!).

Have a lovely Saturday Sko-mateys!

If you mean the V5C "log book" 'Registered keeper' they don't AFAIK, by 2011 the vehicle information should be pretty correct as that what  the "road tax" is based on.

Cars , their engines, platforms, transmission all have different names and codes used by different groups just to make things more difficult when looking up parts and other info.  If you don't have the original factory info IIRC there's a paper label stuck on the wheel well in the boot that gives details or if you put the car's registration  (number plate) into some parts suppliers, like Opie Oils as just one example, that should give you info too - but as with any info double and treble check it with at least two other (hopefully) reliable sources.

You'll get on well with the VW over-complicated computers then and love the nerdy legacy VCDS diagnostics.

Until very recently for 20+ years I was using cars from the 60s and 70s as my daily and other transport.

The Germans marques for whatever reasons only had one reversing light but two lenses even the more expensive stuff. I was out in my neighbour's 1991 Merc today that only has one reversing light - and boy did the bonnet line seem low especially as the seats are higher than I was used to and I'm used to low cars.

Even my 1969 British/English car had two reversing lights and that didn't even have an interior light let alone boot light, or hazards, or cigarette lighter, or mono radio, or  .  .  . 😄

Only real advice I can give is  have a good look at that Owner's Manual and refer to it before doing stuff and keep your car battery in a good state, especially charge as the computers and their programs are very needed and can throw up all sorts of unexpected issues if the car battery gets low even if the car starts and the lights seem bright enough.

If you're a pro-pensioner you wont need to tinker with your car as you'll have a new car and change it every few years and before the warranty is out. 😉 😄

Good luck.

Thanks for all the info - sorry took so long to get back...work...  and yes, I might be upgrading at xsome stage. EXCELLENT advice on the battery! Thanks!

I been ordering some switch fixes and such and spent an intimate evening with the manual.

Any idea on where"s credible to download a repair manual? (too many cowboy sites out there).

Try a Search on 'This Forum' (top right corner of this page) or at 7 euros a time(?) cost see below just posted by varooom. -

Erwin; ok, it's 7 euro plus a CD or USB stick and an hour of your time, but that's for all the manuals for the Fabia mk2.
