Engine oil

Featured Replies

Can anyone advise if Mannol energy premium synthetic engine oil 5w 30  VW 505 01 oil is  suitable for my AZS engine, or are there any other makes better suited.

Also as the car has been sorned for 3 years and only started for 20 mins every 3 weeks, should I use an oil flush product prior to fitting the new cylinder head  as it looks quite black or is it better to change the oil and filter, fit the head, then once back on the road do a couple of hundred miles then flush and replace the oil and filter.

Looking  to buy re build bits black Friday to save a bob or two.

Martin.

VW505.01 is perfect.

Brand new oil will go black in a diesel after a few hours use so the colour is irrelevant, do NOT use a flushing compound, flushing is not needed because modern oils already contain cleaning additives, simply change the oil because it's 3 years old.

Agree on the flush - not needed these days and liable to cause more harm than good.

The few PD's i've stripped down to bare bones have all been clean inside, no sludge or build ups, even with big mileages on them.

Appreciate your advice sepulcrave and Lofty, I have a mate who used to recon an engine flush every time he changed his but I was not convinced, just thought because the Fabia has been stood 3 years.

Regards

Martin

I knew a guy who had an OHC Mk3 Cortina, and he filled the sump with something called Genklene, which is a solvent for cleaning parts. He started the engine and it made a horrible noise and buggered the camshaft. Daft bugger :D

That's how it goes when you know so little that you rely on what stuff looks like rather than how well stuff works.

Yep.

I only use flushing oil when say recommissioning a classic car that has stood for 20 years and may not have had an oil change for a decade before that.

When I do I mix the cheapest most rubbish oil I can find 50/50 with Paraffin.

For an equally scuzzy cooling system I use dishwasher tablets or detergent but take great care with the subsequent flushing, neutralisation and protection.
