Mechanical key won’t lock into fob after battery change

Featured Replies

Changed the battery on my 2021 Octavia key fob, the chrome key which you pull out to open the fob won’t lock into place after changing the battery, if I tug it slightly, it comes out without pressing the button on the side. I think it has something to do with the u shaped spring that the button pushes. Any ideas?

Thanks

Ignore me, just figured it out. You need to have part of the mechanism poking out before pushing the key in.

Had the same issue myself a while back, bit of a head scratcher at first but once you figure it out it's quite simple! 🙂

I am having the same issue. Have popped the mechanical keys out of both fobs but can't get them to stay inside after pushing them back.

Have looked at mechanism - but can't see what's wrong.

Any thoughts on how to fix this please?

I had a similar issue after installing a new battery in my main keyfob. The mechanical key wouldn't stay inside. Very frustrating...

It wasn't until I opened my spare keyfob and looked for a difference in position, did I notice that the little spring wasn't sitting correctly inside.

With the cover off, you just have to ensure the spring is sitting flat on the plastic guides inside and allows the key to ride in and out without drag. I.e. not twisted.

Hope this helps.

For reference here is a photo of the key with the spring in the correct position.

I have found that you do not have to remove the mechanical key to pop the cover off the key as the manual states, you can just pull it off with your finger nails or a small screwdriver, leaving the mechanical key in place and saving yourself a hassle.

Excellent explanation of the situation and, how to fix it.

The problem I have is that once a month the other keys that are on the same key ring manage to actuate the release for the mechanical key.  Then when I remove the keys from my pocket the electronic bit drops on the ground.  Fortunately it has always happened outside my own front door and I've heard it hitting the front step.  I will be putting a bit of insulating tape over the release button.

Thanks. That video explains it very clearly. Problem sorted, mechanical key back in fob. What a crazy, over complicated design though.
