And yes, most definitely subjective time. Enough to reconsider my life decisions thus far, at least.

Many cups of tea have been drank, nothing alcoholic as I will still have to drive back home.

I suggest considering the below as an appropriate standby for future such extended imbibings ...

I have heard it suggested that instead of one of the Bhuddist-inspired chants to accompany and promote meditation one could consider instead "Windows95, Windows95, Windows95 ...".

I did eventually get this system going. No, not today. It was, surprisingly, the same day I started. Runs alright, but Christ it feels slow compared to the Fujitsu system my Granda has, although, it does have a 7200rpm drive over this IBM's 5400 unit. :)

This Christmas I have mainly been collecting up old kit I've built for family over the years and they're now all in my office being parted out. It's a shame how little some of them are worth compared to how much they cost new. I've also pared down my home kit recently to try and cut down electricity usage so it's of no use to me.

Left to right:

Current home Hyper-V server (NAS, router, other stuff)

(hidden at the back) a Lenovo i5 that my daughter had from her old office before they closed down. That's been upgraded to a better CPU and more RAM

Intel Q6600 in a purple Chieftec Dragon case. I forgot how much the old Chieftec cases weighed as they're made from really thick steel

My old Intel I7-920 (very expensive at the time - the Noctua heatsink alone was £70+. Now nobody wants to buy it for pennies 😐)

AMD Phenom II 940

Pentium 4 2.8 in another weighty Antec/Chieftec case. That still had Vista on it

Sadly most of this will end up at the tip unless I can flog it on fleabay/Facespace

What's interesting is how compute power has increased whilst power usage has decreased - the old P4 is about 65W - the same as my current AMD 3700X which is light years ahead. The i7 is 130W!

I had my old faithful out recently to use the only working copy of VCDS I have. XP os. The battery is stuffed like most of my old kit., so needs constant power. Just for nostalgic purposes a picture. If anyone wants any of this old kit. I have a few n600/610c models if parts required.

Okies. I'll nip back and get it tomorrow  There's a load of old Sega megadives / Master Systems and some original SNES and Playstations there as well. Bit pricey, mind :D

I don't know if you can do it at your local council tip, Ryan but I used to buy old PCs and other bits and bobs from the ones around Southampton. Got some cracking bits. Surprising what some people leave on old HDDs if they're still in the case.

AP, from our local tip, it's who not what you know.

Looking at your interest in98, for FE I got a registry hack for either using large memory or HDD larger than a set size.Possibly both, but there on my store HDD, although I seem to rember that one is a program and the other a registry fix.

Likewise, the man at our local one doesn't like me, and it's on a booking-only basis so I don't get the opportunity to do any 'hunting'. :D

FAO @AnnoyingPentium You want me to open it and check (can't test it, obvs) it's all intact or would you rather savour the ceremony of the unboxing yourself?

I reckon it'll be fine as-is. I'll PM you to wheech the money in your direction soon. :)

Ah I had that Chieftec case in blue. I loved that case it was a total beast and really easy to work in.

I'm sure I have a stack of P2 processors somewhere in my Dad's attic

  • 3 weeks later...

I have a few decrepit PCs, oldest are Sharp pocket PCs 1500 (2) with plotters that work, Sharp 1360, a Casio pocket pc ( with cassette interface), Texas Instruments Ti 84 plus ( bought so I could run BBC Basic on it), a DIP pocket PC (otherwise known as a Atari Portfolio runs MS Dos 2.1, lotus 123), several Win CE devices, Psion 3a , Acorn A7000 (cmos battery modified as originals will leak and eat the motherboard), Amstrad NC100 (also runs BBC basic), Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Pro V2010 laptop ( heavily modified the original 1.6 Celeron M CPU upgraded to a 2.0 Pentium M and a SSD installed running Win XP - used to run a HP scanner that had support dropped in Win 7). I also have a few PCs (5) /laptops (2) from the last ten years mostly running Win 10, apart from the HP microserver and a Dell  1600 workstation that both run Unraid.  A bag full of PIs of various types, (1,2,3,4, pico ).  Most of the stuff I can copy stuff to and fro (serial ports), the DIP is a bit awkward as it requires a serial port adapter and I have parallel port adapter. There is even a utility for the Casios to convert recorded programmes to Basic and vice versa, although I had to recompile the source code to get it to work on  a modern 64bit OS. I also have a Commodore 16 which has been converted into a USB keyboard as the original MB was badly damaged.

Ooh reminded me I have a bag of Palm Pilot and Palm 105 PDAs plus a few odd WM6 mobiles phones (pre iPhone days).
I've dumped so much interesting kit over the years.
My Mrs keeps trying to get me to get rid of my big box of cables, but no way, I know I'll need that sony propriatory micro USB to firewire adapter one day.

I've got a couple of Palm PDAs and a wad of 'feature' mobile phones. The computer selling that I've dabbled in comes with a helpline, that goes back to a Sony Ericsson W810i with an Asda SIM in it. Cracking little phone.

You'll prove her wrong. My Mum chucked out a Nokia phone charger of mine thinking I didn't need it... then found and needed my 2610... :D

Oh wow, an update!

The current standings of working computers versus broken computers isn't looking good... I've got three 1990s Toshiba laptops. The oldest, a 1995 T2130CT is working alright, although the PSU seems to be whistling, the plastic disintegrating, and the keyboard in my later Toshiba Satellite Pro 430CDT.

Speaking of, it's dead. Very dead. Kaput. No life. Zilch. Zero. Nada. There seems to be a common issue that afflicts these, where the internal CMOS batteries bomb the mainboard and corrode their way through like rust on a nearly new Fiat's bodywork. This also seems to be what killed my Tecra 510CDT, which I sold on. The only way to solve it, it seems, is to repair the mainboard, or buy another and fit it myself, which I'd rather not do, but needs may push things in this direction if the deal doesn't work out.

Furthermore, I've got a Satellite 310CDS (passive matrix screen, but the best spec of these three otherwise) which I use for word processing and off-line accounts (it's about as secure as you can get since it doesn't have any way of getting on t'interwebs. However, the power brick for it is now knackered, with no status LED or anything of the sort, which is a nuisance.

I'm currently using the dead 430CDT as a big paperweight of a battery charger for the battery from the 310CDS. Creativity and that. :D

Oh also, 'the deal' is that instead of repairing the gubbed Satellite Pro, I've agreed to buy an IBM ThinkPad 600E from someone I know and have bought parts from before. It comes with a spare 600-series machine to keep it going, along with some other accessories, which is nice.

Anyhoo, the desktops are running fine. Which is good. Touch wood and that.

The keyboards from these machines are both duff. Currently speaking to a collector who may be able to hook me up with some spares for the older machine. It has sentimental value to me, given it's been in the family since new in 1995/96. The PSU is not whistling, it is indeed the LCD panel, and the plastic is much the same as it was... ****ed!! :D

Please spare a thought for us Pentium 4 users in this heat. Please. :D

Speaking of, I fitted the NetBurst Celeron @@Lee sent me. I haven't started the system yet, but most likely will do tomorrow as it'll be my first day off after six shifts on!
