Engine rev's by itself

Featured Replies

HI there

Does anyone have or has had an issue when excellerating the engine quickly revs an extra 300-400 then drops back below

before starting to climb again? almost sounds and feels like an automatic gear change. More noticeable changing from 3-4

at just under 3000 revs jumps over 4 then back down.

I have tried all the different draining modes eco, normal or sport all the same

I'd appreciate any feedback as its cost a fortune and no one seems to be able to pinpoint it

2l Superb Elegance 4x4

many thanks
mike

That sounds like a slipping clutch.

I assume you have a manual gearbox?

HI Softscoop, Many thanks for you post

yes manual gearbox, how would you know if that was the cause as this is an expensive item to replace
only to find out that it hasn't resolved it

Garage have said that they didn't think it was the clutch

If there is an increase if revs without the road speed increasing at the same rate, then suddenly the revs dip and match the gearbox/road speed, the clutch is not able to transfer all of the power from the engine into the gearbox.

Whether this is because the friction plate is worn, contaminated with gearbox oil or the pressure plate isn't providing enough clamping force I can't tell you.

Get yourself over to another independent garage for a second opinion.

superb reply will do just that - thanks for the knowledge

This video gives you a great overview of how a clutch works.

Spot on thanks

I'm in agreement, it has to a problem with the clutch, for the engine to increase in revs without an increase in road speed it must be clutch, there is nothing else in the drive train that would allow higher engine speed without the road speed also increasing.

Many Thanks Graham

best start saving then 🙁

Does it happen when you are accelerating hard through the gears and you have just changed up a gear?

If so then a clutch hydraulic "feature" and one that wont cost you any money if you adapt to it or very little to adapt the vehicle to you!

I presume you mean driving modes, are these not for the DSG transmission?

HI JR

yes it very evident when driving hard through the gears

and yes driving modes

Appreciate your reply too

Is it a manual gearbox or a DSG?

Do these vehicles have driving modes on a manual gearbox?

Manual Gearbox, sorry

The Octavia does, so I assume the Superb will too.

I think the main function is to 'sharpen-up' the throttle response.

Try changing gear a little bit slower and coming back on the power a little bit progressively and if the slippage stops then the problem is the clutch bleed block AKA clutch peak torque limiter.

VAG in their wisdom decided that it was better for you to burn out the clutch than put too much torque through the drivetrain

There is a restrictor valve in the bleed block that allows you to disengage the clutch (depress pedal) as fast as you want but not engage (release pedal), it throttles the return of fluid from the clutch slave cylinder and is akin to you riding the clutch while you get back on the gas.

The restrictor can easily be drilled out or rip off merchants will sell you a shiny alloy one for silly money, TBH once you understand what is going on you initially counteract by modulating the throttle and in time you subconsciously slow down the gearchanges to avoid it, we are only talking a fraction of a second.

HI JR Thanks for the response I will try it
if I get 5 mins I will get someone to video the issue so that you can see

it for yourself
