Did u flush ur intercooler? if so im intrested to know how u did it and what u used to flush it with

No i didnt, my mechanic friend tell me, if turbo was still working, i need flush IC

Until you disassemble things you'll never know, it's likely the oil seal on the turbine side of the turbo failed so any oil will be confined to the exhaust pipe.

Hi again

 

Today was my day for the dreadded job and oh boy!

 

I got the Turbo out, installing the other one tomorrow.

 

i did pretty much the same as Jakubini. I removed the right wheel and drive shaft. I didnt remove the battery tray or the engine mount, on my car, i guess since i have no DPF it wasnt really needed to pull the engine forward any.

My biggest problem was someone apperently had the intake out at some point and the unbrako /six points for one of the oil pipe return was rounded off, so no way in hell to get them out easily, so instead i had to remove the entire cooler thingy or whatever it is that covers the intake bolts. Once i got that knucklebusting job done, it was fairly straight forward removing the exhaust manifold thankfully and got the turbo out.

 

Broke the oil feed line, no way of getting it lose from the nut,the pipe itself twisted around, so i ended up cutting the pipe to get the nut off.

Used 7 hours total including a few breaks and im guessing at least 3 or 4 of them was spent on messing around with the intake.

 

There was a LOT of oil on both sides of the intercooler in the hoses/pipes, however the intercooler itself looks fairly clean as far as i can see. Going to try flush it where it sits with break cleaner tomorrow and see what comes out.

 

Heres a picture of my turbo, and theres no bearing left.

That's quite something, consider the cause and not the effect.

 

It would be prudent to drop the sump and check the oil pickup for obstructions and replace the oil filter and immediately check the oil pressure upon starting the engine.  Otherwise you could kill your new turbo prematurely.

Thanks for the suggestion.

 

I thought about that myself, dropping the pan and have a look. The car has been worked on before i got it obviously and u never know what can have gotten into the sump, like for example silicon. I think i will do that and also look at the filter.

 

On the other hand, the car has 270 000km on it so idk if its that strange the bearings finally blew?  but of course, i rather check than risk another failure.

But another thought, when it sucked this much oil into the intercooler, wouldnt u think the pickup and line is clear?

 

Will still check tho, just thinking about a possible cause.

There are many variables to consider e.g. oil quality, driving style, previous indications of impending doom.

 

It's just speculation on a forum, we cannot ascertain the situation first hand e.g. how much oil was ingested, how quickly etc.

 

By the looks of the turbo it was shagged out and on its last legs and suffered catastrophic bearing failure when the turbine side oil seal failed.  I say turbine side as you previously mentioned oil from the exhaust, the compressor looks clean and you did not encounter a runaway engine.

 

Check the air filter assembly and pipework to the turbo inlet for integrity and foreign objects, the damage to the compressor suggests FOD damage, possibly from a loose intake pipe drawing in something, the resulting damage and unbalanced turbo assembly causing it to self destruct.

 

Food for thought but you are correct in looking at the bigger picture, all relevant air/oil systems need thorough checking if a repeat incident is to be avoided.

Thats nice to hear ! 🤩 turbo looking so destroyed 😀 do you want buy brand new or refurbished ? And be careful with this tube, I broke it and it was carrying a booster for brakes (that is translated) brakes were not working properly 🤦‍♂️ it's coming from vaacum pump to servo cost around 40€ 🥶

Hiya folks

 

Well, my turbo replacement didnt go so well.

 

i had almost finished the skoda, ended up falling down the stairs, ripped my shoulder out of the sockett and broke my foot.

I spent 27th to 31th in the hospital. Im home now but my foot wont be back to normal for a while.

Skoda wont be finished until im back on my feet.

 

Im starting to think my skoda is cursed 💀

actually no alcohol involved, but stress, snow on my boots and such was a big no no looking back on it.
