Canbus gateway failure.

Featured Replies

Hi all, I`m new to the forum and have been struggling for the last few weeks to find the cause of my 2011 Octavia 1.6 TDI greenline to die.

It suddenly thru up driver assist button failure along with ABS, steering sbs, brake failure warning lights, it would start and instantly cut out due to ecu immobilising engine cause of the faults.

I  checked all fuses they were fine and tried reading the fault codes but couldn't get communication with ecu, I have pinpointed the issue to the Canbus gateway, I removed it and found it full of water with corrosion round some of the terminals, I have ordered a replacement but my issue now is I will need to code the replacement gateway to the same settings/ installation list as the original one but how will I get the installation list if I cant read the original?

Is there anyway I can find out what the setting should be for my original canbus gateway. I could plug and play but sone of the settings might not be the same and can thru up faults, any help with this would be very appreciated.

Welcome to the forums, Have you tried cleaning/drying out the ECU and refitting it ? what device are you using to read the ECU ?  Apart from that you would need another member with the same car to read thier ECU and give you some settings to check/input with the same reading device. cheers Sparky

Assuming you get comms to the new gateway then you can program the installation list, it brings up all the possible installed modules and you simply tick the ones that you know you have.

Most will be obvious, some may have several choices and you might initially pick the wrong one, you may also miss things that you should have included, but as long as you get the important things like engine ECU, instrument cluster, body control module etc enough vital systems will be talking to each other for the engine to start and run, doors to lock/unlock etc.

Then its a case of looking at the fault codes for comms errors/module incorrectly programmed etc and working out which installed option you should have ticked, it won't look for things that you have not told it are installed so if for instance you have a Bluetooth module it won't be working but you wont see a comms error or anything, you will then need to add it to the installation list.

I chose the latter as its something I have which I have disconnected and deselected from the installation list as it was bringing up comms error codes.

Actually that might be wrong, I have a feeling that when I coded out the Bluetooth module (it kept searching for previous owners phones & I could not delete them) it brought up an error as it was talking to the Gateway module that had been told to ignore it! I had to disconnect the unit.

If that was indeed the case (I have memory problems) then its good, any forgotten modules will signal their presence.

Hi. Shot in the dark here. Did you find where the water was coming in. Same problem. Two gateways replaced already. It seems nobody is able to find where the leak is coming from. Thanks

I assume it was due to blocked drain holes at either side of the bottom of the windscreen, I blew mine out with compressed air, there was of few soggy leaves in there and to protect the module when I re fitted it I put it in a small plastic bag with the opening at the bottom so the module could still breath and if the leak continued at least the module would be kept dry.

@aiddas

I've had similar problems with water ingress and drivers footwell wet and now potential water ingress to canbus and/or other electronics in the cabin.

After checking the drains in the scuttle tray (they were fine), I noticed water coming down the pillar, typically you'll notice watermarks on the fabric lining or in my case was sopping wet. It was coming down through the roof rail fixings above the drivers side and running down the pillar and eventually on the floor.

If that's the case with yours it needs sealing asap...
