Cigarette Lighter Permanently Live???

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have just fitted a Mio car camera to my Father In Laws Yeti and found the cigarette lighter is permanently live, which will drain the battery and its a pain to keep unplugging/plugging in. Is there an easy way to put the cigarette lighter on a switched circuit or hardwire the camera to a switched circuit?

Thanks in advance

Tony

Wire it into the fuse box on the drivers door post using a piggy back adapter on fuse 6, rear window wiper that is ignition live.
Use a connection kit that reduces the voltage from 12v to 5 volts.
Remove the drivers door pillar trim by lifting up but steering the top away from the roof trim to prevent marking it.
Trim just clips back in.
Then poke the wire under the roof trim and around the mirror mount to the camera.
Takes all of 10 minutes.

Hi Urrell,

I am pretty competent to do this but where would I get a connection kit that reduces the voltage from 12v to 5 volts from? Do I need to cut off the power plug and use the bare cables to go across fuse 6?

Thanks

Tony

I used a kit like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185331738845

Make sure you get the right size fuse piggyback/holder though - I can't remember which one I used - sorry!

The piggy back fuse/holder plugs in place of the fuse so that the supply is tapped off to the new cigar socket, then the dashcam power plug is plugged into that new socket.

There is enough room to safely cable tie the whole lot inside the fuse box area.

I replaced my 12v socket with a double USB socket that has a built in switch.

Like this one;

Thlevel Dual USB Charger Socket,

I just bought a cable for the OBD socket from Amazon, it is ignition controlled and very neat.

Hi Muddyjim,

Is it the small size shown in your link that fits the Yeti?

Piggy-back adaptors for both size fuse are included.

Incidentally, the kit is for dash cams with Mini USB port.
