Norway's EV new car sales / first registrations. & other stuff on the move to EV's including with public transport.. Videos.

'EV,s make up to 80% of new car sales in Norway'.      It is being reported.

https://www.zawya.com/en/wealth/sustainability/evs-make-up-80-of-new-car-sales-in-norway-a2i7l772

It makes sense to encourage the Car manufacturers to stop producing heavier and heavier and bigger EV,s that many need to just get about in comfortably.

It makes sense to do that by not throwing money towards those paying for prestige vehicles when it is more efficient vehicles using less materials & resources that are needed.

It does not work when those that can afford what ever they want just buy whatever and taxing them or not assisting with grants makes no difference.

Pop band Aha's story is truly inspiring, maybe even trumps Greta's story.  Happy 20th birthday Greta.    https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-63375504

UK still has a charging network not suitable for just taking my 150 to 240 mile range Zoe so sadly I use the Arkana or even the 898 cc Clio.  Looks like my company is finally linking up to the Octopus salary sacrifice system. Also here Octopus are doing a special link up to Stellantis.  Even with the salary sacrifice system in place cost per month still looks quite high.  VAT needs to go down from 20% it to 5% or at least down to 10% IMO for private buyers and for EV PCP schemes.

Indeed - I've asked before on here why EVs with larger batteries also have to have massive power outputs...   to me a larger battery with a smaller power output in a smaller vehicle giving moderate performance and greater range would make far more sense.

Unfortunately no one responded and the way of the world seems to be 'more of everything'.

The larger the battery, the easier it is to have higher power output. Small battery cannot do high power flow (in and out) due to it would have a C rating exceeded its capability. Unlike ICE cars, putting a higher power motor into large battery car doesn't significantly increase the cost.

The "logic" (not saying it's right, just speculating why) is that battery are expensive, if you put large battery, might as well make the car into a "prestige vehicle" so that it can remotely worth the asking price. Case in point, who in their right mind would pay for a £50k+ Ford?

I still think efficiency is king. Any EV, as long as it was designed with efficiency in mind and is one of the most efficient in its class, it's a good one.

Greta is 20 now?! I always thought her as mid-teens campaigning on behalf of children. Time flies!

Elon Musk is over 50yo and eventually he might oversee his company produce a city or small family size car that is super efficient charging and using the charge.

Yes I get that and the initial business case / marketing / 'prestige' rubbish that a lot of people seem to buy into is the main factor but surely there is a market for 'normal' performance EVs with bigger batteries...

Efficiency is king but a big battery with a big power output in a big heavy vehicle is less efficient than the alternative big battery with smaller power output in a smaller vehicle regardless - so surely that is what we should, as consumers, be asking and pressing for.

And why not pay £50k plus for a Ford if it's 'better value' than a £50k prestige brand where all you are really paying for is the badge and a load of kit you might never use (in my opinion anyway as I'd never afford / spend £50k on a vehicle anyway!).

Personally I think the Koreans and Chinese will soon cotton on and corner the market for bigger battery / lower power / longer range EVs - if they haven't already!

This stuff today in the news on EV's out selling Diesels in the UK in 2022, or First Registrations is a bit of kidology.

It is cars with Plugs the CEO of the SMMT likes to speak about.

Lots of Hybrids are a p!ss take really. They can make sense and people do like them.

Like the Range Rover Evoque owners yesterday that plugged in for a free 15 minutes charging at the supermarket and went away with the car still plugged in and not charging for their appointment wherever.

Lots are just using electric day to day and not needing to run on petrol.

Lots are not.

Unlike ICE cars, the power rating of the motor wouldn't affect efficiency by much. This isn't the problem.

Weight of the car is difficult to bring down when ever larger batteries are involved. Only by changing public perception for mega range, we can have reasonable sized battery.

I agree we must push for more efficient cars. But got to keep in mind sometimes there is a requirement for a slightly larger vehicles. Not everyone is a kids-free couple that only goes on weekend trips with a small luggage (as example).

But the power rating of the motor DOES affect the efficiency and ALSO affects the way people drive said EV...   so the impact is bigger than you suggest...

I agree re weight though as most cars are ridiculously heavy these days - bar a few - especially EVs and granted that's largely down to batteries.

As for the last statement - yep totally with you there - which is why we have a Kodiaq but actually use the Swift far more.

Well, of course mash the pedal more will waste more energy.

But driven in the same way, larger motor doesn't mean higher power draw. This is ICE mentality.

Ioniq 30 kWh is usually considered most efficient EV, 120 Hp.

Model 3 RWD 55 kWh is just as efficient. 280 Hp.

There's less than 3% efficiency difference between them, probably due to vehicle weight differences than power differences.

Stallantis cars are weird. (the commercials are very poor used as commercials out of towns.)

The bigger heavier cars with bigger 18" wheels and wider tyres can perform more efficiently than the smaller / lighter models on smaller wheels / tyres.

Looking forward to getting to try an Astra Estate EV when they are launched.  Slight bigger battery cars now with a bit more power, but i am expecting the range is still fiction if used as a roomier car / estate actually going about on motorways and quicker roads being used like an ICE version would be.

PS.

Parked my car up with 97% battery charge yesterday and leaving it till Monday to see how the battery / charge lasts as i plan on leaving it parked for 30 days outside and no plugged in.

I doubt very much i will be able to unless there is a big improvement in the weather between the rest of Jan into Feb.

96% of 45 kWh will be about 43 kW.  If it just dropped 1 kW a day then fine for 30 days.

Probably the 12 v battery being what goes flat.

I will see by Monday.

In Norway, only rental companies buy gas cars, because tourists don't 'get' EVs

" In 2024, 88.9% of cars sold in Norway were all-electric, up from 82.4% in 2023."

Also, I'm heading over there this August for some sight seeing. Will definitely rent an EV, absolutely no way getting ICE with Norway's infrastructure.

Love the Norwegian vista absolutely top notch, went there last July on the big P&Q LNG ship, something like 186,000 tonnes, amazing views.

Close call between Rockies and Norway for most beautiful place on earth, or so Slartibartfast reckons.

Thought Norway was banning all cruise ships running on hydrocarbon from entering their fjords this year.  Went on a large electric ship up and down the Stavanger fjord, past pulpit rock where Tom Cruise did the Mission Impossible stunt, breathtaking.  Did not quite get to the Arctic Circle but still light at midnight is spooky.

In one place saw about 20 Twizys which one could hire one to drive one self instead of using the coach travel, all good though.
