2068282 Digital instrument panel (FPK) - flickering indicator

Featured Replies

Mine does this too, once every proverbial blue moon.

Thanks for sharing.

@sneal Glad to have helped you!  Hopefully you can get SW update it needs 1400 to 1402 if applicable.

Mine flickers also, I am on what is presumably the latest firmware (1896), it happened before but then they change the steering wheel and the problem went away. Now the same error "Travel assist not available" keeps flashing repeatedly and the dealer told me the factory no longer allows the to change the steering wheel. So any suggestions?

You have 3x things going on here at once.

  • The 1896 firmware is for the infotainment system
  • The digital dash flickerering is separate issue, cured by loading firmware 1402 version into the dashboard
  • Travel assist is an issue with the capacitive steering wheel, they should remove and check for any short, and if none found, they disable the feature

I had that flickering once. Good to know there's TPI for that.

@varooom do you happen to have any info on changes in 3470 firmware? Does it include new views (possibility to change speedo in the middle to something else), same as new cars?

I will be honest and say in November I was on erWin Skoda for the hour access I paid for, and while there put in Octavia 21 to get a look at some of the TPI's knowing they would be of use.  They don't apply to me, but thought it a good idea to share 🤝

Not sure what firmware 3470 is for?

EDIT: They are pretty much like the MMI updates, VAG don't provide a changelog, you have to read the TPI's like above to get a rough idea as to what is being fixed, they don't give you details on what is being added in.  Exception tends to be some massive package like the ID v3 series, where they like to make a song and dance over it all, praising all their new functions.

Additional Information

3470 is virtual cockpit/instrument cluster firmware.

@varooom This is strictly not related, but I'm trying to find a TPI about the software update of the FPK Digital Instrument Cluster (AID / Virtual Cockpit) for Skoda Octavia, Kodiaq, Karoq and Superb vehicles (with components 5E0920790A, 565920790A, 3V0920790A) manufactured from May 2018 to March 2019 that may have a sporadic digital instrument cluster display failure. I believe it would be a update from version 1691 to 1703. Just wondering if anyone here might have access to that TPI.

Not in my collection, but you can wait to see if you get any responses... the alternative is to get online with erWin Skoda and with your VIN and a PDF printer, go visit the Elsa online documents (looking for "Red Book" icon) that will have the large list of possible TPI documents to grab.

You can of course while online get your wiring diagrams and workshop repair manuals first before you begin the search.

When it says Octavia IV does it mean mk4 as in roman numerals or just the IV hybrid vehicles?

I only as as my petrol vRS has had the fuel and coolant temperature gauges flicker slightly a couple of times when i've been driving at night so will this be down to the same TPI even though mine is a petrol car rather than hybrid?

The TPI applied to my petrol SEL 1st Edition - and even after 3 years of ownership I remain confused about IV, iV and Mk4 🙄

Mine has just started to do this. Did you guys find it easy to have the upgrade carried out? Does the upgraded software also enable the dials on the dash satnav screen?

Yes, was easy enough to get the dealer to do mine, though at the time it was still under the three year warranty. How much difference that will make I don’t know. AIUI, it was a small update and didn’t take long - unlike some updates.

It made no difference to the display options in the virtual dashboard; I can get a map view but not with the dials overlaid.

The dials on satnav screen is only available on the newer version of the display. It’s a hardware thing not a firmware/software thing.

Yeah my car is still under warranty, hopefully they sort mine with no hassle!

Just another thanks for @varooom for this post.

As I posted a few months ago I’d noticed my January 22 vRS doing this. I’ve had the car 9 months now and it’s happened a few times both in the day and at night (maybe around 8 or 9 times in total)

Anyway it has been in to the dealer today for a couple of warranty jobs before the original warranty finishes on the 20th of January (I still have another 15 months of Approved Used warranty but wanted to sort these while it still had the original warranty) and the dealership confirmed this TPI and that the firmware did indeed need updating and have therefore updated it today so hopefully no more flickering gauges.

The update fixed mine, so hopefully you have no further issues!

OK..... A quick follow up with mine.

Has anyone that has had this done noticed that the virtual cockpit is dimmer/less bright than it was before the firmware update was carried out?

I've noticed mine is slightly darker/dimmer than it used to be and this is most noticeable when I've driven a couple of times on very cloudy/overcast days when driving through wooded areas and in the city centre with tall buildings and the cockpit display has dropped right down to it's lowest brightness as though it is night. I've also noticed it yesterday when it was very sunny and the display was again hard to read as it wasn't as bright as it used to be on very bright sunny days. This is also then adjusting down the infotainment screen brightness too but in all the cases the headlights never turned on at any point and the DRLs remained on as it was still only around 3pm.

I notice the cockpit and infotainment screen are controlled by a light sensor somewhere around the virtual cockpit as I have shone my phone torch towards the dashboard at night and it brightens up as though it is daylight. The only brightness control you have is on Infotainment screen but this has always been on low and used to pretty much match the cockpit brightness but when driving at night is now actually slightly brighter than the cockpit display is..... This brightness control also only changes the infotainment screen anyway and doesn't affect the cockpit screen at all.

Is it something as simple as when doing the update mentioned above that they should have told the virtual cockpit module that the car has privacy/sunset glass in the back so the interior is darker? (It's a VRS so has this as standard) so that the sensor takes this into account and without being told this the car thinks it's getting darker outside so drops the brightness more than it should and stops it getting that bit brighter than it should be when it is sunny outside?

Yes, there is an automatic adjustment of the VC brightness based on the brightness or otherwise inside the car. There is also a manual adjustment (in my 2020 SEL FE at least) under the menu Car - Settings - Interior - Ambient light.

My guess is that the update fitted in yours was set to a different default to the previous.

I had the update applied in January, and for me the virtual cockpit is the same brightness as before. The only comment I had back from the technician working on the car was they were surprised how long they update took to apply. It took over an hour.

I was under the impression that the VC screen brightness couldn't be adjusted via the brightness controls on the infotainment screen. When i adjusted them previously only the Infotainment screen brightness changed not the VC screen brightness.

Can you confirm when you change those settings on yours your VC brightness also changes as well as the Infotainment screen?

Ahhhhh ignore that reply........

I went out to the car just now and realised the setting I was aware of was the one for just the Infotainment screen under the settings section. Looking at the image you posted I found a separate setting (But named Interior Lighting on my car rather than Ambient Lighting) and this looks like it does adjust the minimum brightness of the VC area. I've adjusted it up to 60% (In all the excitement of realising this worked I forgot what level it was on!!!! 😀) and it is now brighter than it was and something similar to what it was previously so yes it looks like when the VC module firmware was updated it defaulted this setting back which is what I was noticing.

Thanks for hopefully sorting this out for me and stopping me looking like a plum if I'd gone back to the dealership. 😁
