Skoda Octavia Petrol- EPC and check Engine light always on when ignition is turned on and goes away when engine started and P036600 error

Featured Replies

Hi All

First of all - wishing you all a Happy New Year!!!

I just bought a used Octavia 2015 manual- 1.4 TSI Elegance- Petrol from a auto trader advertisement for a hefty sum - took a test drive and did not notice/ failed to notice issues so bought it as the trader said 6 months warranty.

After couple of days straightaway noticed EPC and check Engine light always on when ignition is turned on and goes away when engine started. Took to a local garage and engine diagnostics showed P036600 error- Camshaft Position sensor "B" Circuit, Bank 1 Range/Performance. However the drive, acceleration is normal smooth and tested on A road for a 140 mile round trip.

I am extremely nervous and losing sleep over this issue. Please can i be advised if this is a serious issue- how much money would cost and will it be resolved or worst case scenario i am thinking to request the trader to cancel the purchase as its just 5 days now. Before reaching out to the trader i want to gather as much information as possible so i am equipped well with all the information to tackle them. I am yet to go through the warranty terms and conditions- my mistake though.

Apologies for the lengthy summary and would be grateful for the inputs.

Can't tell you about the error code, but the lights coming on with the ignition and then going off with engine running is normal. Start worrying when they come on with the engine running.

@aitaWelcome.

So how many miles has this car done.

Is there a service history, and what is it a history of actual stuff done?

When was it last serviced, spark plugs and air filter changed as an example?

When was the timing belt changed if it has been?

Thanks Toot. The car has 61k miles on it and the service history is couple of years back Cambelt has been changed and six months ago, oil with filter changed.

Thanks

as ords said it is normal for EPC and check Engine lights be on when ignition is on but engine off, and as soon as the engine is on they should go off.

For the P036600 error- Camshaft Position sensor "B" Circuit, Bank 1 Range/Performance, most probably is the camshaft sensor. Check if the wiring is connected to the sensor. If the sensors is faulty it shouldn't be that much expensive to change maybe £50 to £150.

Thank you Vahids for the kind suggestions and re-assurance on the lights. It helps a lot. :)

I am intending to go through warranty manual and reach out to the warranty company to check if this can be rectified as part of warranty cover.

Apart from this error code, there are numerous warnings i saw when the local mechanic ran the diagnostic checks. Example include rear left door auto lock issue is the one that i remember among many. Is it normal to see these and wise to act when the actual issue happens rather than spending money proactively as the local mechanics that i am dealing with just goes by the error codes and order parts. They do not seem to suggest anything from their experience .. (i have a bad experience with my previous Fabia repairs and finally sold it for scrap)

Once again thanks for your time and inputs.

Thanks

@aitaWho is the Warranty provider?

Is it like a RAC Approved Car with a RAC 6 month Warranty from a RAC Approved Dealer that did a 92 point inspection?

Hi Toot- Sorry for the delayed reply.

The car was purchased from a trader and not from RAC; there was no 92 point  or any inspection performed.

Since it was advertised as Excellent Condition in auto trader with full service history and a 6 month warranty, i assumed that there won't be issues.

Having gone through the warranty T*C's (a company called "WarrantyAssist") the condition is very clear that any existing issue won't be covered under the warranty.
