Coin fallen in air vent

Featured Replies

Hi

So a coin has fallen into the windscreen clearer air vent on my dashboard I can hear it rattling around inside the dash when I’m driving, how do I go about getting it out ?

2017 fabia

thanks

Ooooh! That will require a big of creativity - maybe a length of stiff wire with a curled up end that you smother in sticky tape?

Maybe there is an easier way, I've not tried and hope never to find out.

Is it a copper coin? 1p or 2p

Thanks. AG Falco

Sorted it now, tied a magnet to a thin length of headphone wire, removed the air vent above the radio screen and lowered it down j til I could hear magnet hit the bottom.

I drove around a few corners and hit the brakes a little extra to get the coin to move around and luckily it stuck to the magnet.

it was a 2p, so relieved this worked I was ready to start taking the dash apart!

...but 2p coins aren't magnetic if they were made before 1992 so won't stick to a magnet? During 1992 the composition changed from bronze to copper plated steel so became magnetic.

So in 1992, some 2p coins were made out of bronze and some were made out of copper plated steel, but after 1992 all 2p coins were made out of copper plated steel...and hence became magnetic.

Depending on the year, they could be made from copper plated steel 🤔

or from the Mint themselves...

1992+ they should be steel core with copper plating.

This one was.

I've got an original 1971 version, and that isn't magnetic.

The moral of the story is don't lose a 2p coin down a vent unless it's one of the later copper plated steel versions or you won't be able to retrieve it with a magnet.
