Issue with ignition switch jammed/wont turn can't start car

Featured Replies

Not a great day was out for a little spin today mainly just to wake the battery up stopped for a brew got back in car ignition switch seems to have seized/jammed and can't start car ;-( RAC came out couldn't sort it getting it recovered in the morning. Anybody any thoughts/tips? Thanks Gareth. By the way it's a 2006 Octavia 4x4 estate.

There are videos on Youtube showing how to replace just the switch unit and also the whole assembly. Plus there has been recent posts on similar topics.

Search using google followed by briskoda and your query.

part number is 1k0905851b,

i presume from the dealers it will get expensive

new cheap aftermarket here is £35 come with switch, ignition lock and barrel with keys, this key blade will not unlock door manually, you will have to use old key blade,

your key fob will still work to lock/unlock car,if fob is near barrel then car will start with new keys, you will need this key blade get it cut to the new key from new barrel and swap it to fob,

or you can get full second hand barrel set like this which includes door lock just swap key blades to your fob,

as above all guides are available on youtube

hope that helps.

DON'T GET CHEAP AFTERMARKET

just get second hand genuine

or get brand-new genuine

Bought a second hand genuine unit but used the top and key of mine, issue was broken bits (steering lock) in metal body, so all back together thanks everybody for all the great input.

Sadly will likely have to sell car in the spring due to the lunatic London mayor Khan and his ridiculous ULEZ BS Hey ho.

Did you need any specific tools for this? I'm using my original barrel, just replacing the lock.

No special tools needed, couple of good videos on YouTube worth looking at. I had to replace the barrel but used the original switch. Good luck with it

i had same problem, ordered 2nd hand barrel, all fixed and sorted now, issue was broken bits in the steering lock. Theres quite a few invaluable videos on you tube. None of them cover the full job adequately so Id suggest you watch a few of them ,, some relate to VW and Audi rather than Octavia as the lock is the same across the brands.

@welsh1954 - I believe I have the same problem. How long a job is it? Did you find a decent YouTube vid in the end? The Haynes instructions look reasonable, but lack many photos.
