Why is my dash showing the temperature?

Featured Replies

This has happened recently somehow - but my dash is constantly showing a temperature.  It goes up and down as I am driving and it's distracting / I don't know if it's actually a warning.  Any ideas why this is showing?  To be clear this isn't the blue warning light to do with engine / coolant temperature.  Thanks in advance!

@springdove

You really need to say exactly what your car is, engine, age etc.

So do you think this is the Oil temperature?

    Not Fuel numbers, instant, and because you pressed a button on a stalk and changed something on the dash menu.

?

Is it this same car?

Could it be ambient temperature, range -5 to +5 C?

Good morning all and thanks for your responses and help

Yes it’s the same car - it’s a DSG Skoda Fabia 2009 plate.

I don’t know what it is, I don’t think it’s the engine temperature, I just don’t know what it is and hence my question.

I had it taken to the garage recently for some repairs, perhaps they switched some setting on the dash?

What does ambient temperature mean - is it simply what the temperature outside is?

I just am a bit distracted when it shows up and then keeps changing, wonder how to get rid of this - unless it’s a warning which I don’t think it is.

It's a frost warning because the outside temperature is below five degrees.

@springdove

If it is the same car then you never had a DSG then or now. It is a tiptronic gearbox. It does change gear automatically.

If the dash never used to show the outside temperature or give an ice  (4*oC) warning then change the settings so that you can not see the temperatures.

?

What work was getting done this time?

If same as mine , button on end of wiper stalk toggles through displayed info.

Have a look at your Owner's Manual, if you read the Owner's Manual and refer to it when required you will know more about your car than many long term owners.

If you don't have the paper printed copy you can get a pdf download from the following link using your VIN (vehicle identification number) found on the car and in the paperwork for your car or just look at the (part) year your car was made. - https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Models

From the 05. 2009 Owner's Manual. -

I am sorry, I simply meant automatic transmission!  I don't know the differences between DSG and tiptronic, will google it now :)

Thank you again for your responses - but looks like no further work or action is needed.

OK - will try the toggle to see what happens, and whether this stops the constant display of temperature (I am fine with it coming on when say the car is just starting, but all the time just distracts me!).  Yes, this was yesterday night when it was pretty cold out there.

Work - sadly my car broke down 😞 and had to get a few things done - water housing replaced, alternator belt replaced along with related tensioner / pulley.

It would help if the OP actually were to say what the temperatures being displayed are rather than "they are constantly changing" also not having given their location so we dont know if the outside ambient temperature would be below zero or in the 40's.

Suffice to say if the readings fluctuate fwithin the range of 70°c to 120°c then its the oil temperature display, if they are similar to the outside temperature then thats what is being indicated unless the sensor is faulty.

He also does not say if he has a Maxidot display, if he does then it's been a manipulation of the menu controls and can be reverted to how it was.

I feel for you if your ambient temperatures never go outside of that range!

If you select ambient temperature to be displayed in the maxidot it will indicate outside of that range, I've seen 44°c on mine, the automatic low temperature warning display comes on at +4°c and will go lower than -5°c, I have seen - 12°c and I'm certain it would go as low as any Arctic or Antartic temperature could be.

I'm in Hampshire UK - the outside temperature would indeed have been low single digit (probably colder with wind chill).

The temperatures were fluctuating - at one stage -0.5C, then 0C, 1 C etc.

I am not sure what a Maxidot display is, so I can't say if I have it or not.

I will try the toggle today, because it may be that the mechanic toggled it when the works were happening.

Empower yourself simply by having a look at your Owner's Manual, if you read the Owner's Manual and refer to it when required you will know more about your car than many long term owners and know or can find what all these named things are.  You only need to know where to find the information, the Owner's Manual, rather than having to remember all the different names and  different acronyms that the different car manufacturers use for the same thing.

@springdove

Did your car get a service / oil change this time?

They will have reset the Service Indicator or tried too, so will have been toggling.

......................

A small point.  the ground temp or the air temp is the temperature,  measured by a thermometer.

Wind Chill is, 'feels like'. That is to living flesh.

Good morning all - no, it was just the repairs.

I can confirm the toggle fixed it - so it wasn't anything serious, just that clearly the toggle moved things along the display.  Thanks for sharing the manual reference.
