Dash cam

Featured Replies

Got new vrs coming in few weeks.

Going to hardwire in my dashcam.

From what I've searched on here it seems that rear wiper fuse is the one to use.??

How would this work for cams parking mode as when ignition is off cam would have no power??

Any help appreciated thanks.

Look up and read the previous postings about Dash Cams, they are very instructive.

I connected via the OBD test socket, using a "rear guard" cable from Amazon. the plug has a switch for parked monitoring and is ignition controlled

Be

aware that the connections to dash cam can vary.

Looks well good mate. What fuse did you put it to?

Does parking mode work OK?

That's not hardwired it's using the factory fitted usb c in the mirror surround.

I have mine there too but it switches off with the ignition.

I used the USB-c socket by the rear view mirror also. I had it hard wired into the previous car and it's so much easier to use the socket. One small cable, that's it.

I would have gladly used the mirror USB-C supply, but in my case it seems there's a "protocol" (or communication) issue. I have a new Viofo dash-cam that uses the ancient mini-USB input. I connect it to the mirror USB-C and it looks like it doesn't get any power. The mirror connector is fine, it powers my phone via usb-c to usb-c cable, but it won't power the camera via an aftermarket usb-c to mini-usb cable...
Fortunately, I also have the fuse-box adapter-kit from Viofo, even though I didn't plan to use the parking mode. I'll now have to find the will and time to identify two available fuses (one permanent and one accessory) and then to play a bit with hiding the cables... (it's a dual cam, so there's one also going to the back of the car)

Has anyone tried that?

It is a great idea if camera inside is also good qualityScreenshot_20230125_104439_AliExpress.thumb.jpg.7ea7abe30f32c21ed21ffcf4218fc2f0.jpg

Is the reason you need to find two available fuses due to it being a dual cam??

No, the kit provided by Viofo has 3 wires: 1 ground, 1 permanent +12V (only useful if you use parking mode) and 1 wire for non-permanent +12 V (contact/engine ON).

This kit only powers the front camera. The back one connects directly to the front one for power supply and for data transfer to the SD-card.

I've seen some cables limit the current they can carry. It could be something like that.

I have a Blackvue dual camera hard wired for Parking mode. Can’t remember what 2 fuse points I used but I think they were empty and not used for any of my cars other components. Just remember to put the fuse piggyback in the right way so the power is going through the fuse and then out to the camera if that makes any sense.

Fished the rear cable around the drivers side roof liner then through the rubber grommet and mounted camera on Estate window.

I have this one, although it's called "Fitcamx".

Well, looks good, that i can say. Also camera quality is rather ok. App is not really good, and as it has no display, you either have to connect to camera's wifi and use the app, or remove SD card and take it home. Not so convenient. Also it doesn't have GPS, so info is very limited (no speed recored etc.).

Would i buy it again? Hard to say. If i had USB port next to the mirror, definitely not, i would go with something from better brand. But not having the port it's... ok. No additional wiring needed, installation is rather simple and looks good.

Do i recommended? Don't really know :)

Confused about voltages.  My old dash am worked fine powered from the cig lighter, 12 volts I assume.  Not working on my new Octavia 5 volt mirror supply.  Are all new dash cams 5 volt now?

New ones are USB, so 5V.

Those that plugged into cigarette lighter would be rated up to 15V.

To rectify my own post, the ones plugged into a cigarette lighter might still be 5V, but have a port one side like this.  @arturo you would need to look at the shape of the connections to determine if USB.

Don’t think my Octavia 4 has an old fashioned cigarette lighter socket 🤨. Or maybe I haven’t found it yet!

I think you will find that the ones that are plugged into a Cig lighters have a voltage dropper in the plug, so 12 volts in and 5 out, but the camera's are only 5 volts

You don't need to wire to a fuse, just use a USB "C" and plug into the rearview mirror housing

Thanks but I don't have usb connector in the rearview mirror housing.

That's why I ask to know what fuse can be sued for ACC connection.
