Fan staying on after EVERY journey

Featured Replies

Hello folks,

I've done a search and it seems the fan staying on after you've turned the ignition off is a symptom of an interrupted DPF regen. But my fan comes on after you've turned the car off EVERY day after I drive to work (25 miles) and again after I drive home. Surely this isn't normal? Surely a DPF regen doesnt happen as often as that! There are NO lights showing on the dash.

Now, yesterday the fan started coming on after a few minutes after turning the ignition off and would only go off after I started the car.

This morning now the car is completely dead. I presume the fan came on at some point and ran the battery down, but can't be sure!

Would this be a fan relay fault? Could it be a DPF problem?

Anyone have any similar problems to this that could shed some light on this for me!

My car is a 2014 diesel Octavia vrs with nearly 125k on it.

Cheers,

Jimmy

The average mileage is the minimum I'd want for a healthy dpf.

Did you get the car used and if so how many miles per year do you do? And how was the car driven before you got it?

Definitely sounds like the dpf needs cleaning/replacing.

Definitely DPF issue sounds like. I had the same issue. If you have OBD then can download VAG DPF app to check soot/ash levels.

Soon as I heard the fan is switch car back on and take it for a blast to clear it out.

I bought the car nearly 6 years ago with 30k on the clock. So roughly 15k a year after that. No idea how it was driven before I bought it.

A DPF should be checked at about 210,000km, and then every 30,000km after that (converted to miles = 130,000 roughly, then every 18,500 afterwards)

As you get near to this roughly 130k miles, then it's time to check out the oil ash volume

You should look for these values in either VCDS or another tool to gauge the lifespan of your filter

Plenty of cars go beyond 130k miles, my own is at 145k, but it likes to regen every trip now to remove the soot.  As it ages, it becomes less efficient.
