145Mph for 20 seconds, have I ruined my engine?

Featured Replies

Hey folks,

Needless to say, somewhere in the world a 2012 MK2 FL with 50k miles on the clock half way towards a service interval did 145Mph for about 20 seconds twice.

Oil temp got to 119c.

The owner would like to know if they've likely screwed their engine. Seems to sound the same as it did before the whoosh as they decided to give it the "beans"

Not looking for my dad to reply and tell me or said friend off, just looking for advice.

Was that 145 mph on the speedo or on a GPS...?   😆

It was speedo

So more like a true 137 which is probably about the claimed top speed for the car anyway.  119 deg C oil temperature is well within the temperature range for a modern fully synthetic oil.

Would you like to talk about feeling guilty, now...? 🤔

So no real worries about the engine crapping its self then?
I dont wanna talk about it, my balls were left somewhere up the M5 also.

I'd drive it flat out again for about another 5 miles or so, just to be sure.....😆

Probably did it some good to give it a good thrashing...

Often referred to as an "Itallian tune up"

It will do that all day long, day in day out if the oil temperature remains at that level and it will because the vehicle would have to be on the flat and not overloaded/towing etc to get to that speed.

Engines are tested on the dyno and on banked test tracks in exactly that manner with normal oil change intervals.

That's what you call "driving like granny" if you've ever gone across Germany on an autobahn.

Called an Extreme Adventure Sport in a Euro 5 1.8 / 2.0 TSI with an OE timing chain and tensioner.

I hope there weren't any speed cameras around.

If I remember correctly, they have 14 days to notify you.  In that respect it would have been safer to have been going another, genuine, 40 mph faster.  I have it on good authority that the cameras don't flash if you go through them at speeds in excess of 175 mph.

At least that used to be the case.  As with everything, the world moves on.
