Brake disc rust/scoring

Featured Replies

I live at Scarborough and the sea is about half a mile away horizontally and a couple of hundred feet down.  The car is three years old with about 19,000 miles on the clock abd main roads are gritted in the winter.

Looking at the rear discs and comparing them with marineboy's photo (first post), I would say that there is no more than the outer circle of wear/marking on my discs compared with his.  Rubbing this with a dry piece of kitchen towel, shows that at least some of this is black dust/dirt.

As regards removing rust from discs, driving a short distance slowly with your foot on the brake pedal will clean front and rear discs together.

When you have a Hand brake / parking brake rather than an e-Brake applying it a little will do a better job on the rear discs.

Is it just the quality of these discs are crap? My wife's kamiq is only 3 years old, 12k and just come back from a major service with the advice of new discs all round, that seems mental.

I've just changed discs and pads allround on my 2016 Octavia VRS and that's at just under 70k.

@MO230Does it need new discs all around but the pads are just fine,

or is that just there advice on wear and tear because they are not going to replace them under warranty.

If you were to go trade it today then it is very unlikely there would be new discs getting fitted.

What made it major service at 3 years old?

Was the Brake fluid replaced which was something more than the 2nd service, but then that was the same as the first one other than the Pollen filter done last year.

I'm waiting to finish work to see their report, just advised it was a major service needed. Pads will need doing shortly, as 4-5mm left.

It's a long term rental effectively so not ours but just one of those things, but annoying none the less, especially after forking out just over £500 last week due to stone damage making the AC not work.

If a Skoda Dealership then the term Major Service is a blast from the past decade.

?

How much do they want for oil & filter and look see and maybe a road test and maybe not?

No changing an Air Filter (maybe not even checked), or spark plugs or a cam belt or anything, no coolant replaced or any consumables other than oil and filter.
