Help please! Car starts then cuts out.

Featured Replies

Was driving along at 60 mph car started to judder pulled over. Limited revs too 1500 car would idle for 10 seconds then cut out. If I tried to apply accelerator it would instantly cut out. Had a diagnostics done showed something relating to the egr. Ran test egr opened and closed and soot levels was 9. Disconnect intake, O2 sensor, maf sensor etc car still wouldn't idle for no more then 10 second without cutting out. I did how ever unplug the turbo boost sensor which in then allows the car to idle and accelerate obviously running badly and limited to revs. Turbo is fine, not large amounts of smoke or no signs of oil on the engine area. Any idea are welcome as I've tried 3 garages all haven't a clue tbh. Thankyou.

Forgot to mention. Skoda Fabia greenline 1.2 TDI. 14 plate.

Welcome to the forum, sorry to hear your car has trouble,

You might want to edit your profile for your car to add the engine details, as it will help any future posts you make, as the details will be seen right away,

Not sure I can be too much of a help, but you have to consider the basics of a car.  It needs fuel and air to make it run, the sensors are there to monitor, but could be giving false readings.  Though I suspect it's not a fuelling issue (though never rule it out) it seems more air related as it seems starved of essential Oxygen.

It's a shame the local garages cannot seem to get some kind of a reading on the situation.  I was going to suggest looking at the list of VCDS owners to get access to scan data/live readings, you might be forced to purchase one at this rate (they are not cheap to buy, but pay for themselves after only a few garage visits)  Something you may wish to consider if the local garages cannot find anything, you might be able to provide a scan log in full, and some live data readings.

Have you opened air filter to check it's not got a family of mice in there, so check around the small things you can do to rule out.

Varooom, thankyou for taking your time to respond. I've changed the fuel filter, the fuel pump seems to be working fine and I have checked pipework so I'm with you on that one I don't believe it's the fuel side of thing either. As for the air side I unplugged the O2 sensor and tried starting the car that made no difference, disconnected the air intake pipe that made no difference. Disconnected the MAF sensor that made no change, the only thing where I actually got a reaction out of the car was when I unplugged the turbo boost sensor it allowed the car to run. Not great obviously soon as I plugged it back in again the car then started to no longer idle and cut out instantly when trying to apply throttle. The orignal code I got when plugged into the diagnostics was egr but as you know it could be everything related. Egr valve opened and closed no problem and soot levels in the system was only 9.

Nice work so far then, getting the basics checked.  I am with you on the EGR code, just because the computer points at this, doesn't mean it is.  Maybe the turbo boost sensor is actually shot, so is giving false reads, so that the EGR is in wrong position at the given throttle, choking the poor engine.

Have you seen the VCDS list of users in Lincolnshire that you might be able to visit?  I understand money is tight for a lot of people, but a VCDS will give you ability to maybe see codes the scanner you have isn't, or live data logging ability.
