New drain holes

Featured Replies

I'm sure that we are all aware of the problem of water ingress through the doors of our cars. There are many threads on here asking for help and quite a few excellent guides to solving the problem. However, I've not managed to find if anyone has tried to solve the problem by increasing the drainage from the doors.

I see three drain holes and was wondering if the addition of further drain holes, for sake of argument I suggest two placed midway between the centre and outer holes, would increase the water flowing out of the doors so that it would not back up inside the door and thus leak from the wrong place.

It just seems to me that it would be simpler to carefully drill two new holes than all the work involved in re-sealing the internals of the door.

Only things against the idea that I can think of immediately are making sure the new holes are adequately painted and wondering if drilling further holes could possibly weaken the door structure.

Just a thought. Anyone tried it? Over to you -

There was somebody in the thread on this subject that did it.

Personally I wouldn't as no matter how well you paint it, unless it's a bodyshop job you will get rust there sooner or later.

I think that if the OEM drain holes are not blocked, they are more than enough.

The problem with the water on the doors is not the quantity, but the fact that some water goes on the window rail and then on the inner door panel. This panel has gaskets, but they are bad. So, I advise to clean the existing holes and to take off the door card and add a new silicone gasket with or without removing the aluminum inner door panel. You cand silicone over it and underneath it (of course, by this I mean the contact area). I did both on two doors. I have no more problems with those doors, neither do I have with the rest, but in the eventuality I will do all 4. Good luck.

Don't lose the rubber seals around the panel clips.
