VRS tractor sound

Featured Replies

Anyone any idea why my deisel VRS engine sounds like a tractor (almost tapping) on starting when cold ?

It goes away once driving and warm

How many miles has it done and is this just recently or has it always sounded like this?

It's on 119k only recently noticed it when it's cold start first thing. It went low on oil last month but was topped up so wonder if it's abit dry ?

Been mapped as well but no issues there.

A member appeared to have killed their 1.6TDI recently having run it with low oil.

You oil level check after doing it cold to know there is oil should be done at Normal Operating Temp, so after the oil is at an indicated 90*oC  or so, parked on the flat and after the engine stopped a few minutes.

& the oil is to VW504 00 / 507 00 so 5w 30 FS III,   do not use 0w 20 FS IV,  that VW508 00 / 509 00 is not for your age of engine.

Yea I'm going to check this again today to be sure. My dipstick on the MK3 is a bit funny as the oil is even all over it even to the top

@seneca009Is that even when the engine / engine oil is hot?

?

When did it get an oil & filter change last?

You want to be sure that the oil is not getting diluted by diesel.  This will kill an engine rather quickly.

The oil was changed last December 12th along with the filter. It's been doing heavy motorway mileage since then with some town driving.

Yes even when warm the oil seems to be everywhere

How would diesel mix in with the oil ?

If there is a leaking injector then the excess diesel can get past the piston rings and then into the sump, diluting the oil.

Would OBD11 pick up something like this or a mechanic check ?

Eyes and nose & fingers helps when you take out the dipstick and sniff and feel the oil.

You really should notice if there is diesel in the engine oil.

You need to get a good check of the oil level / quantity in the engine.

?

Did you check the Oil level when cold or when hot when it was refilled at the service by whoever & it was new oil ?

You might have to drain the oil.

Yea I think I'll need to do a new oil change I will test for smell. Usually check when engine parked overnight. The oil was provided by myself
