1.9tdi Engine Rattle only when elevated idle

Featured Replies

Hi all

Just wanted to garner some advice before I go spending money.

Have a rattle on the left hand side of the engine. It sounds like a tensioner but will be next week I can look into it. It goes away once engine settles to normal idle.

Timing belts & tensioner are 2 years old, the aux belt tensioner I haven't replaced. I plan to pull the aux belt off entirely to see if the noise goes away.

Is there anything else it might likely be? I have 3 glowplug faults on VCDS but buying a set and a new loom to fit next week.

Thanks

I can't access your upload.

Give the aux belt a cup of water whilst the sound is apparent, it could just be dirt/glazing and water will immediately and temporarily quieten it.

Don't waste money on glow plugs, they aren't necessary in the UK's climate.

This should be available to watch now.

R.E. glow plugs, is this a common approach not to change them?

OK, so not indicating an oil change is due.

No, if there's one thing the car gets it's regular servicing!

@Taz1983

People replace them because they flag as faulty, sometimes with disastrous consequences when breakages occur.  I have never had any starting problems with my 1.9 Plunger even in Scottish winters with all 4 plugs open circuit, I just turn the key and go without any preheat.  You have 3 dud so if you aren't having starting problems I'd say forget about it and have a drink with the money you saved.

Having listened to your video I don't think it's aux belt fouling but suggest you carefully check all pulleys, A/C compressor shear plate nut/bolt and belt tensioner.  Just whip the belt off and get stuck in.

BTW gain valuable seconds in life by not waiting for the glow plug preheat, key in and turn 🙂

Both of the 1.9's I've had have shown same fault but I ignored it previously I'll keep ignoring now :)

I'll pull off the belt next week and run the car and see if the noise goes away. If not, I'm inclined to think it's the drive belt tensioner, although hopefully not.

Any other suggestions, open to them!
