Help over digi tuning box or switchable map

Featured Replies

hi all cheers for taking the time.

I am stuck, i have read so many pros and cons for both remaps and digi tunning boxes but am due a bonus very soon and want to get the ball rolling on my furby.

I need a switchabe device and seem to see that both offer roughly the same gains with little price difference, I suppose question I am asking the more experienced people on here is what would you go for and why, plus what should i look out for (ie problems they cause) any help would be great as am completely new to tunning motors (if you didnt guess lol), plus whats the maximum to pay as prices vary cheers again.

COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!

:)

tuning box............... cheap and cheerful best bang for buck but may throw up a management fault on the car, gains up to 175 bhp.........Dragon tuning are probably the best www.mrhoot.com I think.

digital tuning box ..........not so cheap (around £200) but still good gains up to 175 bhp on the 130 pd engine .....but as above may throw up faults...Dragon tuning.

AMD one click ....very nice. smooth, not too aggressive, better for your clutch and does the whole remap thing not just overfueling like the two above.....but much more expensive around £400. up to 170 bhp

and then the custom remap (not switchable) available from quite a few dealers, more power but clutch will suffer and more expensive. up to 220bhp depending on how you modify your car before it goes in but that can get very expensive ....can't it Jason

most of these will not make the mpg any worse (you're right foot will do that  ) they will invalidate your warranty and put more strain on the engine

Custom Code were offering a Custom Switchable Map IIRC.

No map will be invisible whether switchable or not.

There are other makers of Digital Tuning Boxes such as Tunit who offer a much better service than Mr Hoot.

cheers gents am not trying to hide the map but will need to be able to switch on and off manly on wheni drive and OFF when the mrs does as will have no clutch left otherwise lol:rofl:

i'd say tuning box as when you change cars you can take it on with you to your next TDi which won't be possible with any form of remap.

Iv had both and while the dragon digital box is very good it is no substitute for a remap I have REVO and the car is unbeleivable in every way smooth when you want fast when you want.Tuning companies spend 100`s of hours testing and tweeking the software I really cant see how a last minute tweek on a rolling road can make alot of difference,so I generic remap is best in my opinion, all standared cars are a generic map after all.

My car has been on Skoda computers and was not detected .

The Digital box was on another car and not my Skoda

the reason for the custom map is that not every engine is the same and not every car has the same mods. if you have fitted a better intake, full exhaust system then your car will breath a lot better so the map will be different to make the most of the mods, the same goes for any modification to the car.

Best bang for buck will be a tuning box as it's transferable between cars and there's also a strong demand for them 2nd hand which means that total cost of ownership is something silly like 10-20 quid :D Remap will ultimately be better, however will not be transferable (and you'll likely want to remove it before selling) and will cost significantly more to buy

On the warranty side, it's much easier to remove a physical device than update the ECU's software ;)

Oh, and give your insurance company a ring before you opt for either - you might find the decision makes itself

what my insurance company who will remain nameless are saying no to both lol think it may have somethin to do with my age and b postcode as am 24 in july with 3 yrs no claims and married have searched web and still can only get cover on 10% gain lol no one will quote me with 160 ish bhp any ideas people tried admiral and few on line brokers. inc confused, elephant and moneysupermarket heard ade flux is place to go but no online quote facility lol

may have to settle for exhaust if that is the case bit of a downer lol just typical :thumbdwn:

Try Chris Knott for insurence - they work over the phone (0800 917 2274) rather than online.

I believe you have to be 25 to be insured on a modded vehicle through them. Could be wrong though, so definitely worth a try :D

I've got a cheap (really cheap) resistor in a box type tuning box, I told Admiral it was between 10 and 25% more power, and they stung me for......

£20 on a policy that runs out in November. or £3 more than the box cost on fleabay:rofl:

32 yrs old, no claims or points, 7 yrs NCB
