EPC Warning light

So there I was 10 minutes/5 miles into a 50 mile journey towing my caravan with my Octavia 1.5TSi ACT DSG when up pops the EPG warning light and "Engine Limited to 4000 revs. The caravan had to get to where I was going and the car was still moving so I carried on at a fairly sedate 40mph or 50ish if I pushed it in Sports mode only S4 though wouldn't change up unless going down hill. Everything very sluggish, acceleration, gear changes, start stop error, unable to achieve ACC speed settings.

 

Got to my destination to drop off my caravan for warranty work and, about an hour later, fired up the car. No sign of EPG light, car behaving normally and home, minus caravan, with no problems.

 

Is it likely a failing battery could have caused this as, since the pandemic, the car has had a lot less use and I have been charging the battery fortnightly with an eTec charger? I hadn't charged the battery for about 6 weeks recently though as inclement weather stopped me when I should have been doing it, but have made several short journeys. I am thinking that if the battery is quite discharged but managed to start the car OK perhaps the additional load of the caravan electrics was just to much for it. The battery was new, with the car, in November 2017

 

Any thoughts anyone.

Was your car ordered from the factory with Towing Preparation and has a factory fit towbar, or one fitted later?

@YMeI take it that was the fitting of the tow bar. 

 Did the car have Tow Bar preparation from the factory, as in the extra cooling?  Not that i expect that is the issue.

Has your car had the spark plugs replaced?   You will need to have it read for any fault codes, like misfires.

Tow bar ordered as a factory fitted option when car was ordered, by me, in 2017.

 

The figures I quoted were for the cam belt replacement.

 

Spark plugs replaced as per Skoda servicing schedule.

Your signature suggests that you have, or have access to VCDS, so a full autoscan seems like the natural course of action to discover what the engine ECU thinks the trouble is.

I do intend to do this but haven't used my cable for about 4 years so 1 - I can't find it and 2 - when I do find it it will probably need updating so I haven't got round to it yet which is why I posted. Is a weak battery a likely cause do you think?

Sounds unlikely to me, do you have a meter with which to measure its voltage some hours after last use?

I have cleared all the faults and been for a short test drive. Another auto scan showed all controllers "no faults found."

 

I'm not unduly bothered about the heated steering wheel fault as it is an old one and the heated steering wheel gets warm when I want it to and, to me. that is all I am looking for. Don't pretend to understand the mis-fire and Westgate stuck open stuck closed though.

 

This is the first time I have done an auto scan since I did the tweaks in my signature and it is the first time I have seen my auto scan with no faults showing.

The lighting fault codes I ignore as there is nowt wrong with the lights and never has been. Funny that it has disappeared now though.

See what faults return by scanning semi-regularly until one does, or the EPC light reappears. The first engine fault to reappear is likelier to be the true cause, subsequent ones may be 'collateral issues'.

Battery fully charged Saturday 8th May. Didn't check the voltage after charging. Ctec charger until green light lit up.

 

After a 20 mile run in two stages of 10 miles out, 2 hours off, and 10 miles back, on Sunday, tested battery today and it reads 12.4 volts. Battery is over 5 years old is it failing?

Might be getting past its best, but I'd be rather surprised if it has anything to do with those faults.

I wondering if the extra load of the caravan electrics on top of a failing battery may have something to do with this as driving 100 or so miles, without the caravan, since clearing the faults, nothing has re-occurred.

I have replaced the battery as the resting voltage was hovering just under 12.5 and it is 5½ years old so not at its best. Travelled several hundreds of miles towing since and problem <so far> has not reappeared.
