Rust cure.

Featured Replies

Gents, at almost 20 years, Furby is suffering from minor rust on Cills. Can any one recommend a treatment to hold back the invasion of time. I've tried sever things over the years, but nothing seemed to work.

I use a product called Vactan which is a rust converter/primer. There are quite a few similar products and a search on Youtube should show applications and results. Many people appear to be using Lanoguard as a post treatment protector instead of the old Waxoil type of coatings.

Thanks, Keith, what I was looking for. I used a few of these in my early days and they had little effect. Possibly as I was using it on Badly Made Cars.

But I posted hoping someone had a good experience with one of these products

Now can someone suggest a problem for ageing hips & knees. ( for me).

Ebay was where I sourced Vactan. Did you watch any reviews on YT?

This stuff works pretty well.

https://www.hammerite.co.uk/product/kurust/

It's worth removing as much rust as possible before applying any treatment or paints. Preparation is boring, laborious but important. Kurust works well but it (along with every other solution) does not soak through rust to the good metal unless its surface rust only. Depending on how much rust you have I really like the diamond grit disks that go into your Dremel. They buzz away rust pits very well and you can get right into the nasty bits. I note that often rusty areas have small rust 'bore holes' that are deeper than surrounding rust.

I have had good success also with Hammerite anti-rust primer on top of the Kurust. It really blocks moisture and air well I feel, those being the catalyst for rust.

I have tried most everything as a back to back comparison on the 3 Roulotte de chantiers that I have restored in recenbt years, none of the rust convertors do anything other than create a stable surface for painting over and the rust always comes through no matter how good the paint coat, some better than others but none "cure" or convert" rust entirely.

Regarding moisture and air, I completely agree and that is where the last product that really does do what it says on the tin comes in, Owatrol oil, it seeps in and seals the rust from air and water, it stops it in its tracks but does not cure or convert.

Overpainting will make it prettier and may add some protection but the bits I haev simply treated with the oil look exactly as they did 5 years ago after being outside exposed to the elements ever since.

I had a patinated rust & green coloured cast iron water fountain, it looked good but the rust was spreading, Owatrol oil has kept it exavtly as it was when I applied it.

My 36 year old toolbox and roll cab had rusted under the paint, made worse by having to be stored under a tarp during a garage build, this week I ground all the loose paint & rust off with a wire brush head in angle grinder, then Owatrol oil on the rust and bare metal, then I painted it with enamel mixed with Owatrol as they suggest, cynical me thought it was just to get you to use more of the product but it really did go on well and flow out, as good as the old lead paints used to be.

The finish is great and it appears to have stuck well to the 48 hour cured Owatrol which was still a bit sticky to the touvh.

apologies for typeos.

That's what I used on mine. Will report back in a year to see if it's bubbled back over again.

Regardless, be sure to get the rusty area cleaned back to metal if it's just surface rust.

Foud the stuff, but now comes another question. How do I find paint code of Furby. My local paint shop can get me a 90% match, and local Halfrauds can get match on VIN, but its hiding place is a mystery, and I do not really trust Harrys{as on broomstickes) + mates in Halfrauds.

On the production code sticker in the front of your service book & also under the boot carpet. For example, mine is 8151 (Corrida Red).....

In typical "tidy it away as done in over the river format" SWMBO has decided that my "brought into house for safekeeping" service manual was put in a safe place( skill passed down from mother to daughter in the boro as FIL told me) and my mobility scooter has rubbed the label under boot carpet. So only place I have I have to look is on VIN label( Passenger side on front inside wing/on V5). Once upon a time, long time ago e had a post on vehicle labels and I did post mine up. Sadly I can't find it, but if any( possible mod) can resurrect post I'd be grateful.
