Working on pyrotechnic components:

  • Working on pyrotechnic components:
  • Check whether the airbag warning lamp lights up or flashes.
  • If the airbag warning lamp lights up or flashes, the event memory must be read.
  • If there is an entry in the event memory, always follow the Guided Fault Finding instructions ⇒ diagnostic tester.
  • If the airbag warning lamp does not light up or flash, or if there is no event memory entry with “Shorted to positive”:
  • Switch off the ignition, keep the ignition key outside the vehicle and wait 10 seconds.

Working on the airbag control unit - J234:

  • During work on the airbag control unit - J234, the battery's earth strap must be disconnected while the ignition is switched on.
  • Then cover the negative terminal.
  • After disconnecting the battery, you need to wait for 10 seconds.

The battery must be connected with the ignition SWITCHED ON.
When this is done, nobody must be inside the vehicle.
Exception: vehicles with the battery in the passenger compartment.
Stay out of the effective range of the airbags and seat belts.
Wash your hands after touching ignited pyrotechnic components of the restraint system.

Pyrotechnic components may not be opened nor repaired; always use new parts only (risk of injury).

Pyrotechnic components, which have fallen down on to a hard surface or show signs of damage, may not be installed any more.

Before handling pyrotechnic components of the restraint system, e.g. when disconnecting the electrical connector, the mechanic must perform an electrostatic discharge. This electrostatic discharge is achieved by touching earthed metal parts, e.g. by briefly touching the door lock.

The installation of pyrotechnic components must be performed directly after removing them from the transport container.

If work is interrupted, the pyrotechnic component must be placed back in the transport container.

It is not permitted to leave the pyrotechnic component on the ground without supervision.

Pyrotechnic components must not be treated with grease, cleaners or similar agents.

Pyrotechnic components must not even be temporarily exposed to temperatures exceeding 100 °C.

Please refer to the special instructions on driver and front passenger airbags in the Workshop Manual for the vehicle model.
