BYD Atto 3 - Short UK Test drive

Featured Replies

As per the title I had a short spin in an Atto 3 yesterday courtesy of Stratstone MK - previously a Jag dealership.

It was not bad at all. It was our first time in an EV so me & the Mrs were curious to find out more & whether something like the Atto3 could be on our list as a future replacement for one or both of our current cars.

It's a well specced & built car - even the base model has an opening pano roof & all the driving aids. Only £2k extra for the top spec model which adds V2L, a powered tailgate & a few other bit's. LFP battery with 260 mile range, a bit of a wild interior, 7.1 secs to 60mph reasonable size boot & rear passenger space. No frunk but quite a bit to like. BYD are offering £3k contribution for their finance plan at the moment. We have previously looked at an MG4 & ZS but not driven either. By comparison the Atto3 is a better built & finished car. More expensive as well.

Unfortunately it's out of our price range as a new car. If it was selling for the same price as it is in OZ & NZ (£10k cheaper over there) it might have been a different matter.

I guess we will have to watch the market & test a few more makes / models before we make a final decision. Either way it will have to be a used model of some sort, prices for which are starting to get a bit more reasonable.

I quite like the look of the Polestar 2 but used prices for them are still in excess of £30k & it doesn't have a rear wiper - a pet hate of mine & an essential item for any hatch, estate or SUV / crossover in the UK, IMO. The search continues.

The MG4 should be in your price range, under £30k? Try to get some "contributions" or forecourt discount.

Prices are coming back to normal used car prices. It's definitely a good time to be in the market for one. Now is a buyer's market.

In reality we are nearer the £20k price bracket so it will have to be a used model of some description. It needs to have a decent boot space, 4/5 doors & the Mrs wants heated seats, blind spot monitoring, pano roof & a shed load of other features. Problem is she's got used to all the features on her Karoq Edition & is reluctant to go  without them in the replacement EV. Typical.

The reality is we will probably keep her Karoq, which I will take over, & (much to my regret) sell my Superb 280 L&K Estate to make way for the EV. I will miss the power & practicality of the Superb.

I'm looking at some Stellantis models like E-2008, Mokka-E, EC4 & possibly an E-208 but some of those cannot have a pano roof & some don't have a rear wiper (a pet hate of mine) which is a pain. MG4 is not to our taste (no rear wiper or pano roof) & is missing some other basic amenities like no rear interior lights, dark interior & no rear centre seat headrest. MG ZS is also a non starter because of undersized wheels & it's goofy looks. ID3 is still too expensive & it's carp infotainment system would preclude it anyway. Don't like the look of Tesla's which are too expensive anyway. Love the look of the Polestar 2 but too expensive & no rear wiper.

Why is it we always like the things we cannot afford?

Stretch/wait for an Enyaq?

I would but it's too big for the Mrs. She even finds her Karoq a bit too big for her day to day driving so we need something smaller. A Kamiq or Fabia EV would have been fine but of course they are not available. ID3 is a no as well due to it's god awful infotainment & interior quality.

I'm currently looking at a 22 plate Pug E-2008 GT. Just not sure my wife will get on with the position of the silly little steering wheel pugs have now. I need her to get a test drive to confirm if it's a goer or not.

I have a friend that went 2 years e-208, nothing but issues, then Citroen C4 EV. It is going back and he is going PHEV.

My Corsa electric is hard used and gubbed, the drop link issue is as my friends e-208, and the C4 and other Stellantis EV's.

Dealership / Workshops, software, hardware, lack of Bandwidth with dealerships, software updates etc all issues.

Stallantis is mot sorted or dealers, and Vauxhall are the worst of the Group.

I hate the Peugeot steering wheel, the dash and the seats of a e-208, i did have one for a few weeks during lockdown.

Lease / Motability is one thing.

Owning one of these would be crazy no matter how cheap you get it IMO.

EDIT.

PS.

A MINI Electric if no need to go more than 100 miles.

An e-UP! / Mii Electric if available and early issues sorted or a Citogo iV with charger issues sorted for a good small EV.  Likely not cheap though.

Take a look at the hyundai kia EVs...

& i forgot.

For room / space / value, a MG5 Estate.

Long range or not long range.    If i was spending cash money buying i think that is what i would be getting.

They drive and handle like normal cars and are on sensible size tyres.

Good car and good reviews on YouTube.

Only two criticisms and that it is a bit short for an estate, should be another 20cms longer and secondly the driver interface is not as good as western IT.

Otherwise ticks boxes. Needs a bigger brother.

I saw the Atto 3 today at FCLive. Its size seems very good, not too big externally but big enough inside as regular car. Not sure about RRP though, they need to undercut the established to gain more mindshare.

I'm more interested in the Delphin, its size is even smaller, perfect for city runabout. Again, official RRP is too much, need to be priced similar to Fiesta.

BYD stand was super popular.

The MG5 is too long for my wife. She struggles with my Superb Estate whe she has to drive that from time to time.

Agreed. But it would be too big (long) for my wife.

I now am. After looking at the Pug E-2008 today it got the thumbs down from my wife. Apparently the bonnet is too big😕.

Saw some Kona's on the same site which got a better response from my car blind wife - she's been caught trying to get into the wrong car more than once!! And one of them wasn't even the same colour or make as hers😖

After seeing the Pug 2008, E-C4, E-208, Corsa-e, Mokka-e & a DS3 all on the same site today I think the Stellantis models are a no. We did also see some Kona's & Niro's today which got a more favourable reaction from my wife. They were a bit more expensive but have longer ranges. Saw a few Mini's today as well but the 2 doors & the 100 mile range is not enough. I think the search is narrowing down to a Kona. Might wait until the new Knona comes out (soon) which should drop the prices of the current used models, hopefully.

The latest Soul does the job perfectly.  A neighbour has one, it moves seldom but he loves it when he uses it.

I drove an early one and liked it but that was when 90 miles with then was just a wish.

I had many octavia estates and felt that was spot on at around 4.75 M.

OK for city car parks but plenty of room for dogs and double prams etc.

My enyaq is even shorter than an Octy estate at 4.64 M

We saw a Soul today as well. Wife didn't like the Stormtrooper look to the front end. There's no pleasing some people.

And my Arkana little bit shorter than this but still well over 500 litre boot but not ideal for woof woofs.  But great value, range etc.  Mad range of cheaper cars on their way. Model Y for less than £40k should be here soon.

@Colin170CRWas it in White, because it was a shame it was not a red one she saw first.

They are the most efficient of them.  Not Red Soul,  Soul over Niro.

Yesterday i should have taken a picture in the car park of a new Kona, a Kamiq and a Arona.

All 3 were black and it was how small the Kona & the Kamiq looked that surprised me.

The kona is a nice place to be as well, or at least the higher spec ones are.  I nearly got the MIL into one a while back.

Ahree re the soul...   They are very colour sensitive but i know others who have also commented on the Darth Vader look at the front.

Thank goodness drivers seldom see the outside of their vehicle when driving.

Personally i am a fugly car person.

When you have to plug in at the front of your car you get to know that end very well.

I actually could not have lived with the 'Charger place' on the early MG's as bending would be an issue and my eye sight when it is dark is like anyone's but where a torch is needed and chargers that have no lighting and cars that do not help is just the likes of thing you get from designers / manufacturers, like no rear wipers, non heated windscreen washer bottles & wipers that get stuck under snow ice when conditions are of that sort.

That brings me back to charger flaps that freeze shut.

But then Skoda have had petrol / diesel filler flaps like that for decades and then were that stupid to put Ice Scraper in them.

I think it was a White Soul with a red roof? The only one they had.

Yes the Kona, Kamiq & Arona are quite small. The Arona is the smallest of the three I think. Nearly got a Kamiq but we settled for a 1.5 Karoq because it had a pan roof & 4 x 4.
