windscreen chip

Featured Replies

Washing the Karoq today I noticed a small windscreen chip. I took a pic but its a bit blurry and didn't like its photograph being taken. It measures about 10mm wide, horizontally, on the far passenger side of the car.

The screen is the new  "wireless"  heated type. I have no idea if the heated screen still works, but the light comes on and I can hear a relay click on when I turn it on.

I don't remember a stone hitting recently so it probably happened some weeks ago.

My plan was to monitor the crack for now but I have no previous experience of this happening. Has anyone had this problem?

Get Autoglass ( or whoever your ins co work with ) to check whether it can be repaired , before it gets any worse. Usually only costs £10 or so for a chip repair and doesnt affect any no-claims

I beleive I can see a 5mm crack extended to the right, which I think may mean it's a no-go on a repair (certainly from my experience).

Depends where it is on the screen. There's more allowance on the passenger side. Usually they ask you to upload photos of the chip and location and they'll tell you whether it is repairable

Many thanks for the replies Nottslan and Dappernut.

Yes Dappernut, there is a 5mm crack extended. Nottslan I have got on to my insurers and they use Auto Windscreens and appointment booked for next Friday. I did have a text asking for a pic, but I was filling the form online on my laptop and seemed to qualify for an appointment for a repair as I had to say which area of the screen is damaged. It was a "D" area, (nearest to passenger door) where the drivers vision side is an "A". The chip is not in an area where it is swept by the passengers side wiper blade.

Cost is £15 excess if I use the recommended repairer and doesn't affect my No Claims.

Added info.

Good luck.  Personally I've never had any joy in getting a repair carried out when there has been any cracking at all, so do please let us know how you get on?

Tbh I don't think they will be able to do anything repair wise.

I was originally going to do a wait and see what happens. A friend had a small crack on her windscreen, went down a pot hole which jarred the car, and the crack become huge.

Its such a tiny little chip too. Must be brittle glass.

I will report back next week!

Until repaired, I would refrain from switching the screen heating on, as the thermal expansion might enlarge the cracks.

Good idea, thanks.  It helps having the warmer weather now.

Ok, reporting back. The repair is done, with an after and before pic. The 10mm crack can just about be seen, as its no more than 3mm now - took a while to find the damage after the guy had done it - a good sign!

He was from Alaska - never chatted to an Alaskan before, and probably never will again! Anyway all looks good to me. He said there was a little dirt had got in to the chip, which he couldn't remove.

Strange thing, he had never come across this type of heated windscreen before. I found myself explaining it was a copper conductive heated screen with no filament/wires. So he couldn't advise me if it would affect the heating element or not. Little chance of needing the heated screen till the Autumn and I cant think of a way of testing it.

You need the inside windows misted up - switch on heated screen and it should clear within a minute, certainly much, much faster than side windows. Entering the car after our running session on a cool morning/night is a guaranteed recipe for instant steamy windows.  Of course, you could try exercising inside the car

Steaming kettle or wet dog.

Or Dogging 🤣

Choosing the right exercise is key...   :)

😂 Reading the above I thought I had clicked on to the wrong website!!!

Its been countless years since I exercised inside the car!

I put my back out adding loft insulation so my mind boggles at the very thought of "car exercise" 😆

I am not a runner and I have no dog for dog breath or dogging, but I have a kettle so will try that thanks J.R.

This thread has not ended as I expected.......😳

Oh !  Has this thread ended ?

Lots of us thought it was just getting interesting !

I'd appreciate any advice.  I noticed a chip on my windsreen passenger side, a week or 2 ago and today got around to making enquiries with LV.  The phone call was in the end automatically passed to Autoglass.  Measured today, the actual chip is about 1mm diam, but there is a horizontal crack extending 4mm either side and a vertical crack extending 4mm up from the chip.  Both these cracks are internal within the glass interlayer structure and can't be felt on the inside or outside glass surface (only the tiny chip on the outside is felt).

The Autoglass lady said they can only do chips bigger than 3mm and so I need a new screen @ £95 excess.  If necessary I'll have to go for that ultimately, but it seems drastic and would rather not subject the car to such invasive action, needing resetting of sensors etc., which Autoglass do say they will do.  I'm wondewring if her statement is true, or is it more money for them at the expense of, mainly, the insurance company.  I could see if there are other windscreen repairers around and ask for their assessments.

I'm inclined to leave the crack alone for now and see if it gets much worse or stabilises - is this a sensible approach on my part does anyone think.

I agree, a new screen seems a little drastic. As the OP, the pics above relate to my Karoq windscreen. The repair was sound, I struggle to see where the damage was! I did it through my insurer - they use AutoWindscreens. In my case, the chip did not measure 3mm. Would your insurer use a different company? The repair was so fast (20 mins) im thinking it may not be too costly to get it done yourself, or at least get quotes. A friends car survived ages with a chip on his windscreen. But he hit a pot hole, and the cracked the screen from top to bottom.

Thanks for that comment, it encorages me to seek 2nnd and 3rd opinions.  LV my insurance company use the well advertised Autoglass crew.

Will do.

I had a chip about as big as a match head repaired a couple of years ago,

It didn't last and had to have a new screen, it was done by Auto windscreens and all was ok after. a 2018 SEL 4x4

When Autoglass replaced my screen it came with the sensors so they just pushed the mirror with its electrical contacts on and everything worked, well, wipers, lights, never been sure about the automatic dipping. Hefty increase in insurance at renewal though I gather this is down to inflation rather than the windscreen claim. The chap who did it was very good at his Job so no complaints.

Thanks Gomezz & SSC.  Looks like I don't worry too much, if in the end I do need a windscreen replacement.  The horizontal & vertical cracks under the chip haven't got any worse since last Friday - been too busy to check with alternative window repairers just yet and this will have to wait another week or so.
