2019 spark plugs replacement interval ?

Featured Replies

Hello

My 2019 citigo only has 24000 miles , wondering if spark plugs need replacing yet ?  ( due a 4 year service soon)

Not sure if plugs are iridium or normal ?

Car is starting and running lovely

Thanks Steve

I'm trying to find this information out for a May 2019 SEAT Arona 1.1TSI 115PS, it has Iridium plugs or so the VW Group copied parts listing claims.

I'm just trying to get the service parts replaced when recommended by VW Group for this car/engine, I'll add in the air filter to that as well, it is my younger daughter and husband's first car and they know zip all about car servicing needs, so I'm just trying to be a useful father

Okay nothing wrong with making our own minds up and sticking with 4 years at that sort of annual mileage - but it would be useful to know what VW Group recommend.

My wife's 2015 VW Polo 1.2TSI, another EA211 engine, does not have Iridium plugs and the recommendation for it is 4 years XK miles for plugs and air filter, so this year is its second plugs and filter change.

I get the feeling that you are considering that if a car has Iridium plugs, then the recommended change period is longer - that is my way of thinking and so why I'm trying to find this out as well.

Edit:- what is your engine code?

Just checked citigo use standard nickle plugs https://www.sparkplugs.co.uk/ngk-spark-plug-zker6a-10eg-96596-5

From specs appear to have a recommended service life of 30k

They only cost about £6 a plug so might as well change them

In that situation so would I.

the iridium is possibly for turbo variants.

Every 4 years. See here for details, posted 26th March 2022:-

NGK 96596 were for my 2018 Citigo.

Skoda garage quoted £115 to supply 3 sparkplugs and fit !!!

Are they difficult to fit DIY as I'm not paying £115 , when I can buy 3 sparkplugs for £18

Cheers Steve

That member of staff might well have quoted the Skoda Fixed Price Service and maintenance cost for Spark Plugs at a Service on 4 or 3 cylinder cars.  A rip off.

Actually the 'Citigo'  is not the same fixed price if they had actually checked properly.  But then they never.  Still a rip off though.

UK VAT @ 20%.

If you supply only 3 spark plugs and fit and charge the same as supplying and fitting 4 spark plugs and charge VAT then HMRC are being cheated and so is the customer being robbed.

This fraud has been going on for ever with VW Group and others.   Same with Oil and filter changes with a fixed price on under 2.0 litre engines.

Some need 2.8 /3.2 litres oil and some maybe 4.8 litres.

Small engine capacity car owners being robbed.  HMRC / Treasury cheated, so Tax payers.

in 2023 the prices of 2021 or 2022 have risen, and the bottom prices are becoming common.

No, see my post above about what you need to do.

Spark plugs are under coil packs that are under the ( removed ) air filter housing.

One electrical clip per coil pack to pop off and then one 10 mm bolt that holds the coil pack down, then pull up gently to remove.

Use a small 10mm spark plug / 16 mm Hex socket with a long extension bar to remove spark plugs.

Interesting topic.

I have a 2012 build Greentech 3 door, bought at 55,604 miles. Registered 5th September 2012.  I checked the maintenance  records and it appears that it never had its spark plugs changed at all. First entry in the record book was on 20th August 2016.

I just wonder whether service packs, both interim and full, were available at all?

My mate changed the plugs last Friday with car having done 59,112 miles. The 3 plugs were £21 total (after GSF discount) and cost of labour (he spent an hour and 15 minutes, as the coil packs were hard to pull out) was lunch at the local Beefeater. No way I would pay dealer prices as car is out of warranty. My mate commented the Citigo is cheap and easy to work on.

By the way, the Skoda is my daily runner as I have an Abarth for weekends and events.

Great forum, I am finding this a valuable resource.

What was the condition of the old plugs like?

Piggybacking on this, did you manage to change it yourself? Any guides please?

Recommended tools?

How would one know that the spark plug needs changing? All looks okay since we bought it at 63k miles.

Who is this referring to?

If me, there were quite sooty and coked. Not surprising given they lasted 30,000 miles. Or 58,000 miles because there are no dealer stamps in the service record book between 0 miles and 55,604 miles. Put it another way, no service records between delivery day in September 2012 and handover to latest owner (me) in November 2021.

Dealer stamps aren't a thing with Skodas these days. The service history is held electronically by Skoda.

Contact a Skoda dealer for details of your car's service history or a decent specialist independent can also get access to the Skoda service history.
