Slight clunk from rear brakes

Featured Replies

Hi all, I’ve done disk and pads on many cars stacks of times with no issues. However one thing I was aware of once I change the rear disk and pads recently.
It happens when going forward reverse - coming to a stop so the auto hand brake engages - then as I move off in the opposite direction there is a momentary clunk/click.

I almost wonder if there is some play in something allowing momentary movement. Or something like the pads are moving ever so slightly within their guides.

I’m yet to jack it up and take a look at it.

I don’t have any issues with the brakes other than this odd clunking noise.

This sounds a good hypothesis.
I would have a look on pads and brake calipers too.

Sadly this is a big common issue on the mqb platform for a lot of people.

genuine pads are just as bad as I’ve found out.

if you look on any of the mk7 golf forums there are a lot of complaints of it too.

and Skoda/vw is yet to bring out a solution.

Ok thanks, I did a quick google and can see. I’ve had a mk7 golf previous and never had these issues and that’s with running Bosch parts. Annoyingly I even put more lube on the contact points to reduce squeal… maybe I put too Much on!

I’m still going to jack it up  and check it over as would like peace of mind something else isn’t a miss.

Some original Brake pads have a sticky layer on the metal back of the rear brake pads.

Removing the pads and cleaning / lubricating them or replacing them and lubricating them / or having a set of brake pads with no stick layer can have this effect:-

Only noticeable when you go from forwards to backwards and brake, and / or vice versa.

Thanks. AG Falco

The sticky layer that is used is often 3M VHB tape.

I am going to be stripping mine down and adding this to stop the clonking noise. Hopefully it sorts it.

shame when they are brand new genuine pads and both front and rear knock slightly

I (rightly or wrongly) put some copper grease between the piston and the pad even though there was that 3M sticker. Maybe that’s counter productive.

I strip / clean and relubricate my brakes every autumn.

Did this on my Fabia III the first time at 6 months old.

The noise will quieten down, but not disappear.

The upside of this yearly maintenance is that my brakes are now just over half worn at 7 years old and 71 K miles.

Thanks. AG Falco
