Is an OBD2 scanner an essential item for an Octavia Mk4 IV owner?

Featured Replies

Given all the little and not so little software bugs in the Octavia Mk4 is an OBD2 an essential purchase for an octavia owner. Not thinking of coding but don't want to pay a dealer everytime something may have gone wrong. Seeking the collective wisfom of the group as I could not find a specific OBD2 thread.

Thanks in advance. BRSEng car code 39 on its way hopefully.

If all you want to do is scan for fault codes, then just buy a compatible one and download the appropriate app.

But if you want to scan for faults and tweak things then OBD11 is the cheapest route otherwise you'll be looking at a laptop and VCDS which is serious kit.

Just be warned that you may get accused of tinkering by your dealership if you do something wrong, like I was.

Got one after getting my car, updated the lane assist, and enabled standard cruise control, and have not used it since. That was over a year ago.

I think that's the problem - we all want to adjust just one or two features and then leave well alone.  And for that we have to get a piece of kit we will never use again (SnailUK would you like to sell me yours? - I have to adjust . . .).

I don't recall the OBD eleven dongle to be all that expensive, although I bought mine about five years ago.

There was an option to gain free credits, which if I recall was about watching ads from start to finish. I used to play them and read the paper whilst they battered on. I still have over 500 credits.

Like @avi4tor post, you tend to use it to tweak a few settings then not much else apart from fault diagnosis. My Mk3 was bulletproof, not much diagnosis required at all, however I'm getting my money's worth on the Mk4 😬

Indeed, 5 credits per day if I remember correctly, but this option was removed last summer.
