EPC & Engine light with horrible gear changes DSG200

Recommended Posts

So here we are.

After purchasing a second hand Octavia mk3 with a DSG7 and finding out about all the trouble these gearbox went through after I purchased it. I think I’m in for a big invoice.

Wife was using the car today on the way home from our friends place as I’d had a few beers.
To get out she had to reverse up a pretty long steep driveway, knowing how fragile the box and clutch is I was twitching.

seemed okay, until 2km’s down the road she went to pull out of a junction and CLUNK. Something went, not sure what but the engine light and EPC light came on.
Violent shudder like the car was stalling and it felt like car had forgotten how to change gears.

What is worth noting is that I had it in 2 days ago to get 4 new spark plugs. (The mechanic stated they had trouble removing the plugs as the coils were stuck)

Before the spark plug change the car Was driving flawlessly with no signs of gearbox/clutch issues!

Is this my Mechatronics, clutch or something else?

Another note is that the car was taken to Skoda NZ regarding the recall for the accumulator part. During the recall the gearbox had its oil changes this was 2 years ago.

@JamesGornell You have the various threads already on the DQ200 DSG and New Zealand had things better than Europe over Recalls.

So the tech / mechanic has quite possible damaged the ignition coils, or the connections, so that issue needs addressed.

They are going to check the fault codes, see if mis-fires are logged and remove the coils, and probably charge you for new ones.

A car needs Consumables like Spark Plugs, Air Filters changed.

Failing spark plugs can cause ignition coils to fail.

As it is these need to be checked, maybe replaced, because of the issue of someone being a bit rough.

?

What spark plugs were you charged for, have you got that on the Invoice?

Obviously not all are the same, but not that much different.    The right tool is simple and the best and any tool should manage with that.

This way is what is an issue when some do it.

no details on the exact plugs used.

They are the local European car specialists so I just assumed they would be using the correct ones.

I was charged $49.00 (£25.00) per plug if thats gives any indication of the material.

Assume nothing.  You have the EPC light, you could have had the Exhaust Emissions light as well, or Limp Mode.

Do not assume because the plugs come Pre-gapped that they checked the gap anyway.

Or never knocked a plug putting one in.

Or that they actually do have the correct plugs.     But likely it is the coils, or one.

Even just a breather pipe not back on correctly or any of the other things that get coc-ked up at a simple replacing of spark plugs.

'We do them every day, we can do them with our eyes shut, this is our profession'.

very fair point!

as they say assumptions are the mother of all f**k ups.

will call the garage on Monday to get it back in and looked at again.

I have breakdown cover, is it worth getting a tow back there?

Have you got Breakdown cover that has a responder that will plug the car in read the codes, look at the simple stuff before recovering a vehicle.

Like Skoda Assist /AA or RAC etc.   Find the simple fault that the mechanic or tech missed or caused, rather than loading the car and transporting it.

Different but similar.  For those with this engine.

It should not need towed if just a coil or plug, or lead, but that depends on them going to get, being a Sunday etc etc.

Location location location.

PS.

Towing is with front wheels on a Dolly. or on a trailer or flatbed. Not wheels on the road.

DQ200 DSG. do not tow with it in N and no engine running any more than a few yards / metres to a place of safety.

Good to know thank you! 👍

I am hesitant to drive it again to be honest, don’t want to to do any more damage.

I’ll report back in a few days once I’ve got a verdict and costs for anyone else who gets this.

@toot

Update:

Had it towed to the mechanic Monday morning.

Apparently one of the coils wasn’t connected properly.

Mech said he swapped coils 1&2 over to see if it was damaged but everything worked so no faulty parts.

reconnected everything properly and car is back to normal, no more engine light and no misfire.

🤦‍♂️
